Hi guys, so I have a Dell Precision T5400 with the following specs:
2x Intel Xeon E5430 2.66GHz Quad Core's
Dell RW203 Dual Socket motherboard
8GB (4x 1GB + 2x 2GB) Hynix PC2-5300F FB-ECC
Radeon HD4670 512MB
160GB Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 (temporary)
875W Dell OEM 80+
Windows Vista Business 64bit
The PSU has (according to the label on the side) four +12v rails capable of channelling 18A each, and a total combined +12v output of 825W (maximum).
The board has 2x PCI-E x16 slots, and the PSU has 2x 6pin PCI-E power connectors.
I fitted an EVGA GTX570 Superclocked the other day (in the place of the 4670) - basic PSU requirement of a standard 570 is 550W & 35A on the +12v. The card performs fine in games (I used it as a LAN machine to play Borderlands 2 for several hours without issue, as smooth as anything on maximum settings in 1280x1024 - my little Dell server screen) but when I tried MSI Kombustor at stock settings, the card would fluctuate between full speed (798MHz) and half speed throttling (399MHz)
I would have thought the PSU would be up to the task because of the Fermi Quadro's and other such things that may have been put in the machine in the workplace?
Even if the PCI-E connectors only work off of two rails they should still be able to provide 36A according to the PSU spec?
PSU's and rails and amps have always been a bit of a weak subject with me.
I was hoping to be able to fit a 660TI as a folding card at some point. Or possibly a 7950 as a miner.
(though that might be okay since they require less power)
