Right me and my brother have 26 inch Samsung tvs that are also PC monitors. We have decent graphic cards (9800GT, 4850) and it will not go above this resolution (There isn't even an option to go higher, this is max) Does anybody know why? Is it because it's a tele?

Cheers

That'll be the maximum resolution for the TV unfortunately. 720p HDTVs are pretty awful to use as monitors to be honest, a proper PC monitor of equivalent size would be at least 1920x1200. 1366x768 is almost the same resolution used on 13-15" laptops.

I'm guessing the samsung TV's you both have are only HD ready, which means the max resolution is 1366x768.

edit - beaten to it!

I use a TV/Monitor and mine works fine, it's not a big one like, running it 1440x900 and it looks great.

Tried updating your drivers?

Is yours a 19" by any chance? Somewhat ironically, some of the smaller TVs actually use higher-resolution panels. A 26" Samsung TV will definitely only do 1366x768 though, I've got one myself.

how come though? surely a bigger screen should allow you to have a larger resolution?

for example, i have a 40" sony bravia 1080p tv downstairs. if i were to connect my pc to that what resolution could i get? (soz for the noob question lol)

You'd probably get 1920x1080 (which is the resolution of 1080p). 720p TVs are designed for 1280x720, but for some unknown reason, most large (i.e. 26" and above) 720p TVs have a slightly larger resolution of 1366x768. Nonetheless, that's all you're likely to get out of the average 720p TV. Not great for use with a PC because comparatively, that's about the same resolution as a laptop screen.

The irony comes in the fact that the smaller 720p TVs tend to use the same panels as the PC monitors of the same size, which means a 19" TV may well be capable of 1440x900 when connected to a PC. Similarly, a 20" or 22" may be capable of 1680x1050 - the same resolution for a standard 20" or 22" PC monitor. Presumably in those cases, it's just cheaper to use the panels that are already in production than go to the trouble of having lower-resolution ones made.
