Simple question really - can one ADSL modem be swapped out for another, and everything still work, or will MAC addresses and the like need to be given to the ISP? I only ask cos my dad has a crappy old Thomson 330 and I'd ideally like to swap it for a new model without having to try and communicate with some appalling Indian service team! Thanks if you can help...

all you need is to punch in the correct adsl username and password...

maybe confirm the other settings (vci etc), however most new routers have them set correctly anyway...

these settings can be found on the internet.. or ask the isp, id jsut plug it in and set the adsl username/password first it will probably work..

Ah right, ok! Not quite as simple as I'd hoped. He lives in the back of beyond and it's some tiny two bit company I'd never heard of before and who's customer services borders on the non existent. Thanks for the help (so far!!). I might try and find out the name of it. I didnt actually realise ADSL required a username and password!? I thought it was like my cable - just plug and go?!

No, ADSL is authentication based, you will need the username/password and the VPI/VCI to be safe but chances are those will be standard (0/38)if they are out in the sticks.

Ok I stand corrected - he's with Demon. They aren't that small, are they? Anyone care to recommmend a cheap but reliable wireless modem/router? :-)
