I'm in the process of building a new i5 2500k machine for my image editing etc, which when up and running, I also intend if possible, to upgrade this machine ( Compac off the shelf base unit ) with a new ( different) mobo and processor and RAM, providing, the case will accept the new mobo.

The question is: Will the original software that came with the machine, which I find very useful, even after 5 years of use, still work when I re-use the original HDD?

I think I know the answer already but, having never done it myself, I'm sure someone will have a definitive answer.....I pressume that if I try and use the original HP/Compaq recovery software which comes on a partition on the original HDD, it will no longer work with the new processor and mobo, or would it ?

It depends if the software was pre-installed or there's an installer on the CDs (along with any key/serial number you might need.)

Also if it's compatible with the operating system you install, 5 years on there's no guarantee it'd be compatible with Windows 7 for instance, although it more than likely is or there's an update on the software company's website.

Hi...thanks for the reply.
The software was pre-installed and included Windows XP. I would like to keep the same OS and accompanying software suite if possible on the updated base unit and install Windows 7 on my new machine.

I suspect that as the new mobo will have a different bios, the original software won't work!

Very unlikely it'd work and if it's an OEM copy/licence of windows you should be buying a new licence anyway. Essentially you are making it a non-HP computer.
