Ive tried google to no avail (well i tried ring altering). Ive lost quite a lot of weight in the last year, about 60lbs, and my wedding ring dosent fit me anymore, it keeps sliding off my once fat fingers.

Can you get rings tightened, and if so, how do they do it?

Yup - they'll cut a section out and basically weld the two ends together, before polishing it so you cant see the join. Its pretty routine, TBH.

yes, it can be done by a proper jeweler (one who makes thier own jewels)

h.samuel etc may have a service where they send it away

i suspect they will cut a bit out of the bototm of the band and then solder/weld it together

I used to work in F.Hinds as a saturday job and its quite a regular thing,

Depending on how much it needs to be altered it doesnt cost that much,

As Tailgunner said they'll just chop a section out and re-melt the edge's so you can see where its been cut.

Having said it was nearly 10 years ago I did that job.

If the ring is patterned in any way it can make life a little more difficult as they need to make sure the pattern still matches all the way around.
I had one done about six months ago and it looks absolutely perfect.

Rings can be altered in both directions, so if your fingers get bigger you can have a sliver added to make it larger.

As the others have said, it's quite routine and the end result is that you should see no joins at all.

Depending on how much they need to reduce it, a section may not have to be cut out. There is a device which can reduce the size of rings to an extent, it's a sort of roller.

If metal has to be cut out, then it will be soldered back together, re-formed into a ring shape, re-polished, and you will get the excess metal back.

Bin it? Not sure, I had my GFs altered and didn't get the excess back :p

You should have. When we send stuff to assay for example, we get all of the unused metal shavings back in a nice envelope :)

They snip a small bit and then join it up, although this is not advisable for rings that contain stones

One is just a plain gold band, the other is a celtic design band, i imagine that will be a bit trickier.

As long as they stop slipping off my fingers ill be happy, i pointed to something last week on a work site, and one of them went flying off my finger, one of the downsides to losing weight i guess.
