can socket 754s take DDR2?

me and a friend were arguing about it and he says that it can the DFI website said that for his mobo it takes DDR 400
and another website said that DDR 400 was also known as DDR2

I'm sure I'm right in saying it cannot :S

No definately not. I have built 4 socket 754 pc's and they do not take DDR2. They take DDR400 (pc3200). DDR has 184 pins and DDR2 has 240 so DDR2 would'nt fit anyway.

Well, seems many people are guessing wildly....

The answer is actually YES. There are a few motherboards out there for the S754 series of CPUs that support BOTH DDR2 and PCI-E.

But most are not great overclockers and are generally considered budget boards for semperons now days.

People are not "guessing wildly" at all. You are on about the Asrock mishmash combination boards. As he did'nt mention these then the answer is still NO!! DDR1 will not fit in a DDR2 motherboard and vice versa. They are completely different and incompatiable with each other on a normal motherboard. DFI certainly did'nt make a "combination" board anyway.

No, you're 100% wrong, the 754 CPUs have an onboard memory controllers that can't accomodate DDR2 despite all of ASRocks magical solutions. If you can prove me wrong I'll eat my words and my hat. Yes there are PCI-E 754 mobos, but they've been around for ages.
