on offer on steam for under £4 but the DRM notice is putting me off which reads as follows

Notice: After activating the third time your product using TAGES a 30-day timer starts. After 30 days you will get that activation back up to 3 total activations.

I can't make out if it's saying you can only activate it 3 times in total or 3 times then another 3 every 30 days making in 6 in total

I believe it means you can activate 3 times then after the third activation, you can't use the same Key for 30 days and at the end of the 30 days it replenishes the 3 activations

Whats the big deal?

It's the principle of a third party DRM system negating the entire point of Steam - that the games are tied to your account and not a machine.

It's also about not having to deal with multiple DRM systems just to play a computer game that I paid for, while the pirates just bypass it.

You may not have a problem with it, but the Atari and Steam forums were full of people who were unable to activate the game at one point. They were given the run-around between Steam, Atari and Tages, with all three denying responsibility. The activation servers have gone down at least twice too.

That sort of customer support is something I can do without.

I'm one of them. It naturally still irritates me.

What if you backup your Steam folder then copy it back across?

Wouldn't work - the activation information is stored separately.

However, you can of course delete the game and re-install it to your hearts content, as long as your hardware and OS stay the same.

The problem is, that unlike Microsoft who actually tell you specifically how their activation system works and what changes to your system will trigger an activation, Tages, Securom and the other DRM companies are very tight lipped about how their activation systems work, so you never know what might cause the game to re-activate and burn an activation. Often it'll do this silently, so the first time you'll find out you've run out is when you try to run the game, or re-install on a new PC.

Often just running the game under a new windows account will use up an activation, so the definition of 'machine' when it comes to activations is misleading.

how many people have actually been affected by tages? anyone?

...anyone?? (and im not talking server downtime here)

how many times do you need to install the game in 30 days? more than 3? you're doing something wrong if it is and if it isnt, you wont even notice its there just like i never notice its there.

not buying the game because of that? Ridickulous ;)

*raises hand*

I've already posted my problem in other threads currently active about this game, so I won't repeat it here, but a quick google on something like tages activation problem, or tages support problem will reveal that, yes, people having problems with this kind of DRM do exist.

Not getting it, I had a loan of the witcher to try, and after installing it and removing the tages with the latest patch, each time I restarted my PC, I kept getting Tages error messages. Took some time (the usual loads of google searches because the actual makers of tages don't really wan't to help!!!) to get rid of it.
