I have made the width of the container 920px wide but wasnt sure if this was going to render the site too small (width wise) on higher resolutions.

What do you think or shall I put it back to 960px wide like it was originally or compemise and have it 940px?

I think the adopted standard width these days is 900-960px for 1024px res.

Design within that width and you tend to be fine.

Set it to a percentage rather than fixed width, think about the people with small monitors too and there more likely the ones that want IT help.

"f*ck the 8 by 6" - I work in finance, and this is pretty much our design departments opinion.

Our main product website is fluid, but any other side projects/sites we usually aim for 960px's in width - http://960.gs/

Also, install firefox web developer - there's an option to resize your window so you can see how much space, etc there would be if your window was set at a smaller res.
