Can somebody explain how paint blending works?

If you're spraying a mist of basecoat on top of adjoining clearcoat, how is a smooth finish achieved? Sounds like a good way to introduce loads of overspray?

No.

So let's say you are doing a smart repair on one panel.

You do your localised repair on the panel, you spray your primer on the small area.

Then you scuff the entire panel to make it "dull" using either wet sand or scotch pad, you then paint your base coat over the primer flicking away the colour as your get to the original colour. Then your clear the whole panel.

Now you can blend clear coat without scuffing the entire panel also. Do your locallised repair. Tape off halfway on the panel leaving a soft edge.Paint the base coat, add the lacquer flicking away towards the soft edge, then spray a 50% reducer around the blending area and polish.
