Can somebody explain the future to me please?

Hi everyone,

I was chatting with some friends about their setups the other day, and when I asked for some advice for a graphics card they told me not to bother buying one yet because there are new ones coming in the next couple of months.

A) Is this true?
B) If so, what?
C) Are they likely to be priced around £200 since that's all I'll be able to budget for.

Sorry if this has been answered a million times before, but I've really been confused by this.

Thanks,

- Anthony.

With PC's there is always something new coming out in the next couple of months, but there will be less chance of something new coming out in your price range if both the green and red team have introduced their cards for this year within that price bracket.

The 7850/70 are great cards within that price bracket and they come with a bundle of free games too.

if you sit around and wait for the next best thing, you'll be sitting there forever

as with anything electrical it depreciates so fast as it gets updated with newer tech

So I'd be perfectly fine going with the MSI GTX660 before the end of the year?

That's the one I've had my eye on for a while now, Pro Tools wont accept AMD cards according to what it says on their website.

There's almost certainly nothing significant coming out before Christmas. The next generation cards (Radeon 8000, GTX 700) won't be out until Q1/Q2 2013, I wouldn't imagine.

as above, if you wait for the "next thing" you will always be waiting, there won't be anything new out before christmas and particularly if you are looking at nvidia, there won't be any new mid-range cards (E.g. sub-£200) before Q2 or even 3, 2013

I'm no hardcore gamer, that's why I don't really want to push the £200 barrier. The odd bit of Minecraft and The Sims 3 here and there, granted my current PC can't really play games all that well, so I do the majority of my gaming on my console. But I shan't be using that much longer since I'm moving, so a PC it is.

I'd like to play more games on my PC, hence the new build. But as stated, it's a PC more catered for audio software, rather than gaming, but it wouldn't hurt if I could do both.

Thanks for clearing things up for me, and the help. I'll get what I can now, and likely upgrade next year.

Even when we reach other the horizon , the next generation will be better but not buy a mile , I would say 25% is the general corporate target , Even if they could triple performance , why bother , you can drip feed release"s for the next 2-3 years and cut back on R&D .
Both companies will give you just enough in a new card to create demand , nothing more .
If you eventually go SLI and get a second cheaper later on , i would imagine they would out perform the next 2-3 generations of the same card before you would need to replace .

I had that same thought, SLI seems to be the way to go really. When I can, I will!
