Hi All

Like few posts on here I'm looking to build my Son a gaming PC. Im not sure what components i should look to spend more money on and where to sacrifice. He will only be playing fornite etc, eventually i assume he will look to stream, but i can upgrade if needed at a later date. If you don't mind hit me some specs up and any advice i am open too..

Thank you!!

Fortnite will run on anything. Streaming will require a half decent processor though, but even quad cores are cheap now. Do you want a monitor, kb/mouse too?

Being open to upgrading at a later date definitely helps! The £600/700 price range gets tight as it's on the edge of budget to half decent imo.

I know mate.. I would prefer to spend less, but if he uses it enough he will want to upgrade, so I'm thinking spend slightly more now, it might give me a little longer before i need to make any drastic upgrades £££

I have a keyboard and mouse, i will need to get a monitor, but that will be additional to the build price

If money is tight you can get a Xbox Series X/S for £30/20 a month with gamepass ultimate 2yr subscription. It works out the same price buying separately. PC right now can't compete at those prices on releases.

Micky if your were to make minor upgrades on the components you have listed here where would you start first and what would you change them out for..

Cheers

If it were me, to avoid having to upgrade the PSU in 3yrs, buy a better one first. I had that model and it gave me issues early on, lightly faulty however. If the boy wants to upgrade later, i'd rather not be sticking a £400 GPU into a system with an oldish cheap PSU. The AMD RX 580 card is also worth a look at. The next tier up from the 1650 Super/RX580 is the 1660 Super funnily enough. But the cost to performance isn't as good when you start going upwards, moreso when you're looking to upgrade every year! Really you'd be better off going straight in with a AMD 5600XT or GTX 2060.

As for monitors, i cringe at the thought of TN panels, the colours from the ones i've used have been gross. But i've not read anything about the monitor linked. So take that for what it's worth.

No other quality issues i'd personally have with the build.

The AMD 3600 CPU is something you could look at before purchasing the 3100, but no point upgrading to that when you've already bought the 3100 even a year down the line. If getting the 3600, then you should really step the motherboard up to the Mortar Wifi for better cooling. I'll be getting that exact board soon enough. You can get a small cashback reward from MSI also with those, https://uk.msi.com/Promotion/back-to-school-2020#AMD-Motherboard. But the 3100 CPU is a fine processor, and beats anything else at it's price range. The B550 board will allow a future CPU upgrade to Gen 3 if wanted in a few years when prices come down a bit.

I was looking at the 3600 from the start. When i first started looking into this build i was looking into the 3600 and 3300x, but for the slight bit extra i went for the 3600.. Im totally open for slight tweaks and upgrades to get me off the ground.. I just want to put something together that will give him a decent gaming experience, that may allow him to start streaming and things like that.. I just wasn't sure where my priorities lied as per upgrades, like you say a slightly better PSU that will give me space for small future upgrades, and a better CPU. These all don't throw me out of my budget..

its about best for budget, not upgrading in the future. the 450w might be a little limiting in that sense, but the i3 is a 65w chip while the 2060 has a 190w rating. the psu is also gold rated and not of a cheap quality.

3600 makes more sense if he's going to be streaming games but having stronger gpu is also beneficial for higher fps and detail..

Whichever way your probably have to upgrade one of them if streaming games.

Ok, so having looked into things and taken your guys advice on the builds and where to prioritise i have put this in my basket. As I'm not buying a pre built machine it allows me to go abit over budget because I'm buying components slowly over time.. give me your feed back on this list.. i think i get around £36 back from MSI form their deal ATM..

Yea i only put that in due to its RGB qualities, i know the more it flashes the more he will like it at first... I don't mind stepping that down though and getting a cooler like you have said..
