DMT Status No Defect

SNR Margin(Downstream) 104

Line Attenuation(Downstream) 80

New phone line, new connection. Currently getting between 1 and 2 mb connection, not 8 as I was hoping.

Only got put in today, running on a Billion 7800N router, is my line still 'learning'? How long does this take?

I live about 150M from the exchange

Provider? Those line stats are odd, SNR is wrong and attenuation must be wrong as you'd struggle to sync let alone reach 8mb as you imply.

Was that a copy and paste job?

Ditto to Benftl. I'd be expecting a line attenuation of less than 30 for a full 8128 sync, not 80...

That said, if you live less than 200m from the exchange I'd be looking for ~10db/8121 and a decent noise margin.

Whack your router into the test socket (the hidden plug under the master socket) to make sure you've no nasty wiring gremlins and obv ensure all phone points have a microfilter attached.

That said, if you have Sky in a non LLU area (check samknows.com) then your ****** :P

Copy/paste from router stats

Now in master socket, no phones in the house and nothing else connected to it

BT are my ISP, Adsl Max area

I guess I could try the homehub and see how that goes, I just used my router from the start

My ping to jolt.co.uk is around 25ms and stable

Time to call BT?

Is there anything they can do here?

Ok, here are my stats when connected with the BT HomeHub3

ADSL Line Status

Connection Information

Line state: Connected
Connection time: 0 days, 00:02:40
Downstream: 7.938 Mbps
Upstream: 448 Kbps

ADSL Settings

VPI/VCI: 0/38
Type: PPPoA
Modulation: G.992.1 Annex A
Latency type: Fast
Noise margin (Down/Up): 10.2 dB / 22.0 dB
Line attenuation (Down/Up): 4.6 dB / 3.0 dB
Output power (Down/Up): 9.9 dBm / 11.9 dBm
FEC Events (Down/Up): 0 / 0

That's looking much better yes? So my Billion router is the problem?

Thats a lot better.

Download 'BlueEther' & use their ADSL2+ Stats Checker., will give you a few details about your connection & line.

Link: http://adsl.tin2tin.net/

You might see a bit more using a filtered face plate, instead of a filter dongle.
Plus your line will settle down, mine took about 10 days.

Ok, I'll leave it two weeks or so before calling BT

It seems stable, just a low speed. I want to use my router though and not the homehub, maybe I'll contact Billion support and see what they say

Yep those router stats look more like it :)
Probably worth taking the speedtest on http://speedtester.bt.com/
This will tell you what your ip profile is as this is the bit that will really matter. Some peeps have problems with the ip profile sticking causing low speeds, and also this is the only speedtest that BT will acknowledge if you ever call them.
Oh, and now you have proved the fault, try not to turn the router off for the next few days at least as this will slow things down again.

The original router doesn't seem to have a decimal point in the copy and paste. The line stats are among the best I've ever seen. Having a 24 SNR margin at 8Mbit is pretty handy.

Looks like you are connecting at 8Mbit though. Any limits on you from there are fully your ISP fault. Try a different Speedtest node and maybe a different speed test site. Download a file or two from a fast site.

I've left it connected with the Billion, a new firmware came out two days ago, I'll flash that on there when I get back

It's stable and the ping is white hot, which is ultimately all I care about, but bumping up to 8 from 2 would be nice

This.

The IP profile is likely what's limiting you.
If you find that your IP Profile is 7150 (the highest for an up-to 8mbit BT Wholesale ADSL line), then you'll need to speak to BT, as the problem will lie elsewhere than your router or connection.

If your IP profile is low (1000-ish?) then just leave the router connected a few days; don't power it down, don't unplug it. See if the IP Profile rises; if not you'll need to call and ask for it to reset :)

your billion syncs faster than the homehub, the stats look wrong because you are missing a decimal point :P
like so:
SNR Margin(Upstream) 24.0
SNR Margin(Downstream) 10.9
Line Attenuation(Upstream) 5.0
Line Attenuation(Downstream) 4.0

like the others said ip profile is probably 2mbit, speedtester will tell you what it is, it takes 3-5days for it to increase automatically, if it doesnt then its stuck and you need to call the isp. you are synced at 8mbit btw!!

Ok thanks

So the billion screen just misses the decimal for some reason?

Besides my mum's lowly 1mbit connection (about 6k from the exchange) the only experience I have with the home internet is ntl/virgin cable, which always connected at max speed from the get go

Will BT Rambo system you need to keep the router on and hold a good sync speed for 24 / 72 hours before rambo will change the current line rate,

Best way to check is use the BT speed tester site,
http://speedtester.bt.com

Follow on screen,
Make a note of the sync speed and the ip profile,
Within 72 hours the ip profile should go up and this is when you will see the speed go up,
If there is no change and you are not turning the router off get on the phone to BT,

Making sure the set up is ok first, Every thing is filtered ok Ect.

Yup, only using one phone socket and that's for the router, with the microfilter on it. It's currently plugged into the test socket.

I'll leave it there for the week

Ok, I've moved in properly now to the new place and had time to run the tests

Also updated the router firmware, now it's showing the correct stats

Your line stats are brilliant, attenuation etc is all fine and sync rate is at max so I could only suggest that BT, as an ISP, are your problem.
