I currently have an i7 920 2.66GHz (3.2GHz stable o/c) using a basic: Scythe Katana 2 Heatpipe Quiet cooler.
I can't afford to upgrade the CPU at the moment, so would like to (safely) overclock as much as possible with a new CPU cooler & case fans etc.
The thing is i have received so much conflicting information, that i am now completely confused.. several people have suggested i use a: Thermaltake Frio Dual Fan, but others have stated that the best (stable) o/c i could possibly hope for with this cooler would be around 3.4GHz, whilst others have stated that a stable 4GHz + is easily possible with the right air cooler & case fans.. which is correct..? please go easy on the tech speak as i am a complete novice as far as upgrades are concerned.

Thanks.

4+ is possible with the right cooling and the right chip, it total depends on luck! you could have a bad chip and have a "wall" at 3.2 GHz or you cold be really lucky and be able to get over 4 reasonably easily.

I suggest reading some overclocking guides and familiarising yourself with the process. it is best to not start the process with "goals" in mind as how far you can get varies so much.

have a look at the data sheet for your processor:

work out how far you are willing to push it (most people like to stay within Intel specs but its up to you) and see what speed you are able to achieve with those values...

heat will most likely be your limiting factor with your current cooler, so bear that in mind.

hope this helps
