Can someone explain how this works?

They use the electrical wiring in the house as network cabling, probably by overlaying a high frequency carrier on top of the AC load, in a similar way to how ADSL piggybacks on a voice connection. Apparantly they're pretty decent when both ends are on the same ring main, they will work across ring mains but the data rate drops off significantly.

i've not got the d-link ones, but i do have another brand of them, not tested connection speeds, but it's much better than wireless, no dropping, lets my linux machine sit on sharing programs, well till my router crashes !!!

Though 70 odd quid is a bit sharp, but if ** lazy then there perfect.

See Wiki for details on Power Line/Home Plug

I acquired a set of the ones BT are shoving out with the home hub packs from a well known auction site and must say they've been superb if a little expensive compared to wifi kit. I used wifi and even using multiple ap's with improved antenna's, power boosted using DD-WRT I was still having less than ideal results in some parts of the house, power line is a genuine alternative to having to run cable from the computer room to wherever the TV/consoles/media devices end up. Connection speed I get is as fast as a standard 100mbit link and for the moment that's fine, certainly well worth considering.

I presume one end is plugged in to the mains near, and connected to, the router through a normal ethernet port and then the other is put anywhere else in the house just in a mains socket?

Not too sure about the wiring of the house, does it have to be on the same ring and if so how do i find out which sockets are connected?

Are there any side effects on other electrical equipment plugged into the same ring?

Thanks for your responses :)

Yes - Think (PC/PS3 etc)-RJ45-[Home Plug]/\/\/-Electrical Cable-\/\/\[Home Plug]-RJ45-(Router)

The likelihood is all your sockets are on the same ring main, it's rare for them not to be (they'll have a separate RCD/Fuse normally I believe but I may be wrong)

Yes, you can't plug them into the same socket as you plug the home plug into as it's used by the home plug (so you may need an extension etc). Oh yea they will randomly blow up unless you sing to them while doing the happy dance every seccond tuesday in the month at 13:37pm but don't worry they come with full instructions.
