Ok so im not a novice in IT but im not an infrastructure guru either (obvs!). Im trying to setup a fun lil home project and would appreciate a lil help. So Where i live there are 2 different LANs. My LAN which has its own WAN (BT FTTC) and my parents in a flat above (BT FTTC). Now at present their network runs down inside our walls to the bottom flats below us. When we renovated we cut the cable going down and i terminated the LAN to two wall plates. Fed the data into a switch so we had internet and patched it back so that the bottom floor got their internet.
Now that we are moved in we have our own internet and the link from upstairs to downstairs goes via a small poe powered switch ive put in the wall (the top floor switch is an enterprise HP poe switch). So the way it is now we have a BT hub as a router and upstairs have a BT hub as a router, upstairs have a HP 2530 POE switch and we have the same switch handling our LAN.
What i want to do is connect up the 2 networks to allow LAN traffic between both networks, but keep WAN traffic going in and out via the respective routers (mainly to keep my WAN clear as i need it for work). I presume this can be achieved with VLANs but im not sure exactly how to start. Tips and advice appreciated
