Hey guys, last night I was just settling down to watch a video on my computer and the all the menus and windows and taskbar went black, meaning its basically useless since i cant read and text on these black windows. Has anyone else experienced this or have any good ideas how to fix it? The Windows login screen is fine but as soon as it goes into windows everything (apart from icons) is black :( I have tried booting in to various safe modes and VGA mode but it always appears to be the same. Here is a pic i just took with my digi cam..

Right i just logged in as Administrator instead of my normal user account and everything is normal.. But that still doesn't tell me whats wrong with my normal account..

Why didnt you take a screen shot :p

It looks like you are using a custom theme there

have you tried using windows xp deafault one ? :)

Theres nothing wrong with your normal account it just doesnt have administrative privilages, as such it cannot modify the desktop correctly.

eh? My user account is setup with admin privileges, that can't have anything to do with it since its always worked fine and only just started doing it yesterday evening

has someone been messing round with your monitor settings?

can you a factory restore thing in your monitor settings?

No, the monitor settings are fine since the the default Administrator account in safe mode works correctly..

so in safe mode it works perfect?

It works perfect in safe mode in the Administrator account but not if i select my normal user account (which has admin privileges). Which suggests something messed up the display settings for my user account..

I've had this problem before when using a modified uxtheme.dll however as you are not, I would suggest that your profile is.. ...err, broken :p Anyway, backup your old profile via the administrator account to another folder (Administrators 'My Documents' for example) and then delete it from documents and settings. When you log on to your account again, windows will be forced to generate a new profile :) Favorites, etc will be lost although they can be retrived from the profile which you backed up
