Now I know it says socket P but for some reason looking at socket M pictures on the net mine seems to match socket M even though I have a T5450 which I have been told is socket P.

Is anyone able to tell me what socket my cpu is? Also what am I compatable with? All I want to do is upgrade to a 2.0Ghz cpu with a 4MB cache. What cpu do I need to get to get the specs I want?

I'd be inclined to believe CPU-Z that you're on socket P, which is a good thing as it means you wont have to pay an arm and a leg for the CPU upgrade...
I think it's only the T5500/T5600 which are available on Socket M.
Google seems to say that it's for the Santa Rosa platform aswell which would confirm it as socket P.

What laptop is it?
Edit: A T7300 is the CPU that you'll want though. :)

Laptop is a
Packard Bell EASYNOTE MB88-P-003

This info is off the packard bell website for specifications of my laptop. Even there they say merom socket P. eh? I dont get it lol. Can I have a merom in a socket p?

Manufacturer Intel
Type Core 2 Duo Mobile (Merom)
Clock Speed 1.66 GHz
Front Bus Speed 667 MHz
Cache 2048 kB
Socket Socket P
Stepping M0
Maximum power dissipation 35 W
Maximum temperature 85°C

These are the motherboard specifications off the same website. Strange how it says it supports 667/800mhz fsb? Thats socket p right? So why does my socket look like socket M?

Mobile Intel PM965 Express Chipset

* Supports Intel Core 2 Duo CPUs up to 800 MHz front side bus.
* 800 MHz system bus.
* PCI Express support.
* DDR2 (533/667) support.

Intel ICH8-M South Bridge

* PCI Express and PCI bus interface.
* Integrated LAN controller.
* Integrated IDE and S-ATA controllers.
* High Definition Audio support.
* Power management.
* High Speed USB 2.0 peripheral support.

nVidia Geforce 8600M GS Graphics

* 512 MB dedicated video memory.
* Up to 1 GB total video memory using TurboCache.

Conexant High Definition Audio
Marvell Yukon Ethernet Controller

* 10 / 100 Mbit
* PCI Express

Supports up to 4 GB RAM using 2 GB DDR2 SO-DIMMs
Connectivity

* 4-in-1 card reader: Memory Stick / Memory Stick Pro / SD / MMC
* HDMI
* ExpressCard slot
* eSata

See I would believe its a socket P too but when I find pictures of socket P & M on the net mine matches that of socket M.

Also. I was wondering about that. Why do the older say T7200's cost way more than the newer T7300's? Even though the T7300 is essentially better?! It makes no sense. Is it something to do with this nm process?

This is the picture that totally confuses me :( Im sure mine is the socket M on the right? Not the newer socket P on the left.

Is there such thing as an updated socket P for merom cpus or something that different to the newer socket P processors that are coming that arent merom type.

It's still a Merom core in the CPU, just that it's a different socket. Socket P takes upto 800fsb CPUs whereas socket M takes upto the 667fsb CPU's.
The reason the T7200's are more expensive than T7300's is because they are EOL I'd imagine, all the socket M Core2's are expensive.

Edit
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Intel_Core_2_microprocessors
Wikipedia also has your CPU as Socket P.
I'm not sure what the deal is with that diagram that you posted.

Well Im a dumb ass. If I had noticed what my boot screen said before I started asking questions I would have known I had socket P DOH!

Either way Ive just managed to get my hands on a T7300 for £54 which aint bad :D cant wait to try it out
