Sorry for thread hi-jack but:

Would it be possible to quickly go through how you achieved that result?
I was playing around with the channels for a while but the only result I got had white edges, or the shadow was too faint.

I use gimp.

Filters>Colour>Convert to Alpha

Thats all.

If you want you can target the colour via the dialog too.
