Right, so - i didn't know whether to post this in Hardware or Software (since i dont know what causes this), but finally decided to use Hardware. Apologies if that's wrong.

Approximately once every 2-3 hours (not tied to any specific time, this is just how often i feel this happens) any game im playing will freeze for 2-3 seconds, and then in my headphones i will hear the "buzzing" noise that usually happens when PC is about to BSOD.

However, BSOD doesnt happen. After 2-3 seconds pass, game resumes and everything is fine. There are no errors, no flashing screen, etc. Its as if nothing happened.

My steps so far:

1. Disable CPU, GPU and Memory overclock: Freeze still happens
2. Run stress test on CPU, GPU and Memory: All tests pass
3. Run Memtest86 to check RAM: 12 hour test finds 0 errors
4. I run 2x 2080ti's in NVLink, so my next step was disabling NVlink: Freeze still happens
5. Removed NVLink bridge, monitors etc only connected to first GPU: Freeze still happens
6. Connected all monitors to second GPU: Freeze still happens
7. Checked Event viewer - there are no WHEA or errors of any kind that i can find. The only event that happened at same time as this freeze are the three User Profile Service warnings:

Profile notification of event Load for component {B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB} failed, error code is See Tracelogging for error details.

Profile notification of event Unload for component {B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB} failed, error code is See Tracelogging for error details.

Profile notification of event Load for component {B31118B2-1F49-48E5-B6F5-BC21CAEC56FB} failed, error code is See Tracelogging for error details.

At this point i genuinely have no idea what else i could test, or what could be possibly causing this. Any suggestions please?

Win10, 9900k, 2x 2080ti, 64gb 3600 ram (clocked to 3200 normally), 2x nvme ssds, 1x hdd

(FYI this is a fresh build with fresh installs etc)

EDIT: Forgot to add, i am monitoring my CPU with CoreTemp, and even during those freezes my CPU temp and useage were normal, and not in any way strange.

Latest build of windows, 1200 wattage PSU (corsair H1200i iirc)

Both 2080ti's connected with 2x separate 8pin cables as well.

Latest NVIDIA drivers too (updated to new ones an hour or so ago, lets see if that helps, but im not holding out hope).

Nope.

I had the "safe" update for a while when this was happening, only updated to the "latest" update manually when Port Royal was released for 3dmark, since i had to update to use it.

The buzzing always happens exactly during the moment of freeze, and stops after the freeze. It is also not the "signal interference" sound, but the BZZZZZZZZZZ IM ABOUT TO BSOD BZZZZZZZZZ buzzing.

Im using wired headphones anyway.

Yes, it makes no difference.

Update: Just happened now. I can confirm that buzzing is from when game is producing sound and that sound "freezes". I had game alt-tabbed and not making sound, and when freeze happened, there was no buzzing.

I did however find something in the event log:

The network interface "Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller #2" has begun resetting. There will be a momentary disruption in network connectivity while the hardware resets. Reason: The network driver detected that its hardware has stopped responding to commands. This network interface has reset 1 time(s) since it was last initialized.

The question is, did it cause the freeze, or did it happen because of freeze?

Thing is, this was not in the log the previous times when freeze happened, so i dont know if this is just a coincidence. ALso, i just happened to be playing an internet game now - but freeze happened on single player steam games before...

You could try playing a game without eithernet cable plugged in to if it happens and if it dont try using internet again while playing games to see if it happens again, it might narrow down your search to maybe a bad gigabyte port on your motherboard.

Have you got a m8 who has a spare eithernet card you can try or you could try wireless.

I am not using a card, my ethernet is plugged directly into mobo - the mobo has the killer ethernet in it.

Its worth a shot i guess, sucks not having internet but might help me narrow it down

Wow. It seems like this really could be the issue.

It just happened again, and once again the only warning in log at that time was about Killer E2500 Ethernet Controller resetting. Also in my task manager i can see a spike of Ethernet activity at that moment.

GOnna uninstall driver and see what happens

Sadly removing any trace of Killer Ethernet did not resolve anything :/ Still getting same freeze.

I have had issues like this in the past, exactly the same issue, in fact.

Admittedly it was on a completely different system & specs, but it had something to do with the PCI-E Latency Timer.

This was set too low for my system, 32 Bits, it basically decides how long Windows has to wait before accessing 1 thing to the next, accessing PCI-E Lanes, (and I don't just mean something plugged into a PCI-E Slot.

If it's too low, then the system won't wait for whatever is loading to finish, and you can get this exact error (load BUZZ -> System Freeze = ??QuestionMarks??)

Increasing it to 64-128 Bits resolved my issue.

1.) Do you have access to such a setting in the BIOS (search for it deep-deep in the submenus of your BIOS
2.) What was it set at?
3.) If it's 32 or 64, set it to 128, 160 or 192.

Hope this helps.

Also, you do seem to have a lot of of devices on that PC, I am wondering if you're not overloading the PCI slots available for the board/CPU (or maybe one of your devices, NVM Drive or 2nd GPU, is not being starved of PCI-E Bandwidth, causing a latency issue).

Just a thought/suggestion.

Also, do you see any conflicts within Device Manager for ANY device? (even soundcard?)..if so..try to resolve these.

Very dead thread, but maybe there's hope.
I found this thread thanks to searching the event viewer warning "The network interface "Killer E2500 Gigabit Ethernet Controller" has begun resetting"

I've started running into this issue as of late too and it seems to be related to internet usage as the intermittent freezes correlate with high internet usage.

i7-7700k, GTX 2070s, 32 GBs ram, 1 NVME SSD, x4 HDD
MSI Z270 GAMING M7 motherboard with killer built in.

Updated the killer drivers and tried setting my PCI-E Latency timer to 64 instead of 32 but the issue still remains.

Did you ever find a solution to this?
