This is driving me nuts! I've tried everything but seem to be going round in circles or something trying to get this working.

Basically I have Windows MCE upstairs and the 360 downstairs. The 360 is directly connected to a Vigor2600w router and the PC is wireless via a Netgear card.

I installed the PC setup thing and I have a thing in the task bar saying Windows sharing enabled and the 360 is authorised, but still nothing.

I have added all the ports etc to the firewall that 360 needs also.

I think what I need is someone to cut through my confusion and talk me through it step by step - can anyone help? Maybe post stuff here I should do and I will do it and update the post.

Thanks!!

Did you open the ports on the router firewall or the firewall on your PC? It may sound a silly question, but you obviously only need the ports open on your PC.

Remember if you're running a 3rd party firewall (e.g. ZoneAlarm) that Windows Firewall may still be running.

Also, pretty sure the XBOX can only handle MP3/WMA/WMV/MPEG2(?) so make sure all your files are in that format. If you're trying to access a folder with .avi DivX/XVid files I don't think it'll find anything.

Have you tried adding a folder on the 360 and selecting a network path?

I'm using Zone alarm, and it wont let the 360 work properly unless the IP address is added as a trusted IP, so the programs will work okay etc. See if that helps, I justed added the range 192.168.1.100 to 192.168.1.150 to my trusted IPs.

At the moment there is the firewall on the router itself which is configured to let all the ports through to the PC, and I have XP firewall on but I also think this is setup properly (I suppose I could turn this off until it works and then put it back on).

I don't have any 3rd party firewalls installed.

I'm at work at the moment, so won't be able to try until later on tonight.

You don't want the ports open on the router firewall as that could let PCs on the internet access your stuff if you also have the ports forwarded!

I had to set up my 360 within my DMZ to get my pc to pick it up. This was despite having the ports open.. Still... works perfectly now :)

Okay I'm going to have a go at fixing this today.

So I've just reinstalled MCE and this is what I've done so far...

- Installed Windows MCE 2005.
- Installed the additional program from this link...

http://www.xbox.com/en-GB/pcsetup/MCE05Full.htm

- Switched on 360.
- Went througjh setup on PC, it found and authorised 360.
- Turned off XP firewall.
- Checked open ports on router...

TCP 5555
TCP 3390
TCP 3932
UDP 7777
UDP 3776
UDP 1900

According to this page that's all I need...

http://support.microsoft.com/kb/896036/

They are all forwarded to 192.168.1.10 which is my PC IP address. The 360 has an IP address of 192.168.1.11.

It still fails to connect when I choose the Media Center option on the 360.

I ran the tests on the 360 and they all passed except the last PC one, connect I think it is.

Can anyone help???

Did you download the ms updates for MCE after installing?

I have a friend who had major issues because he was updating MCE, when he did a full install and setup the 360 without updating everything worked perfectly

TRY THIS, works for me everytime
Press Start
Right Click on "My Computer"
Choose "Manage" from the context menu.
When the Computer Management console appears click on the Services and Applications icon in the left hand pane, and then the Services icon that appears as a child directory.

In the right hand pane do the following for both the "Universal Plug and Play Device Host service and the SSDP Discovery Service:

Double Click on the service.
Ensure that Startup Type is set to "Automatic"
Choose the "Log On" tab in the services properties dialog
Choose the "This Account" radio button in the "Log on as:" section.
Type "NT AUTHORITY\LocalService" without quotes in the text box.
Don't change anything in either of the password fields. If it requests that
you change the password, clear the field.

Ive got the exact same router (vigor 2600we) and I didnt have to open any ports atall, i think it uses UPnP so I dont think its the ports blocking on your router.

Have you checked to make sure you can ping the xbox360? try checking the DHCP assigned adresses on the router, and if its not there try giving a manual address on the xbox360. I would turn off the windows firewall altogether and try zonealarm (adding the trusted private subnet as mentioned above)

Are you running Windows XP with the 'Welcome' screen on boot, or the user/pass dialog box? You need the welcome screen enabled for some reason, as the 360 actually logs into your pc as a user.

I've never had the welcome screen enabled, works fine :p

I tried this, and everything was already set as you suggested - they were manual (but started) though instead of automatic. I changed them and rebooted.

Hmm that's wierd I was sure I could do this, but now I can't. I can ping 192.168.1.1 (router) and 192.168.1.10 (myself) but not 192.168.1.11 (360). I have checked the 360 - it's on and ran the tests, it has the right IP address (manually assigned).

When the PC boots up I get the welcome to XP screen, but I don't have to login at the password prompt, it just automatically logs in. I am the only user on the box (apart from administrator).

 :(

There were some ports specified in the 360 help text in test testing section which I hadn't opened (they weren't specified on the MS site) - I added these but still no luck.

TCP 2869 and 10243
UDP 1900 and 10280 - 10284

Added all ports to the router open (forwarded) ports list in both directions - i.e. to and from 360. Still cannot ping it.

Open Ports...

TCP

5555
3390
3932
2869
10243

UDP

7777
3376
1900
10280-10284

Probably a stupid question but have you tried it with the IP set to automatic?

If not i would suggest trying this, change it to automatic, Reset th router back to factory defaults as a previous poster has said that he had no issues, reboot everything and try and connect again

I set the 360 back to automatic and it now picks 192.168.1.100 and the correct DNS etc but I still can't ping it.

When I run the Test Media Connection from the 360 it passes the PC Selected test which says that it found a PC that could stream media. But it fails the PC connected test.

SmokeKingGun - what settings do you have on the router for the 360 - do you have any firewall or ports forwarded etc?
