hi guys

im having trouble at the minute with my computer.

long story short.

i had a gigabyte 78lmt-usb3 board, with this chip.
had random crashes at stock and when clocking.

i checked memory and board, and it turned out it was the last 2 slots (furthest away from the cpu) that had gone down, and had taken 3 of my 4 2gb sticks with it (corsair xms3 1333).

so i returned the ram and board to where i got it from, got 2 credit notes, and purchased a asus m5a97 le r2.0 and i bought 8gb ddr3 1600 corsair xms3 ram.

after installing the new mobo, and ram, i was getting the same issue. 2 furthest slots not working.

i rang up the store to tell them and i need a replacement. and he said, have you checked your CPU ?.. he said because its AMD and they have a Memory chip set or something.. (can't remember), he said it is more than likely your CPU.

so this is where i am now

i ram hyper and did a 32m memory test, passed fine.
i have stressed the CPU with intel burn and prime 95 and now i have just clocked it and is showing the clock speed as 4.21ghz.. and im thinking, maybe it is my CPU ?

has anyone ever exp this before ?, where your CPU has stopped 2 dimm slots from working ?

any help on this, i would glady accept.

thank you.

PS, im thinking of returning the board and getting a replacement just to see if its the board, or the CPU, but any ideas before then are welcome also.

thanks

Jonnyp

Your memory test on the replacement board and RAM tests ok with the full 8GB?

I have the 8gb in but it's only seeing 4 of it. But what is strange is I can check each stick in bios and it shows all the info up about each stick.
And windows says 8gb total, 4gb usable..

Maybe it is my cpu ? Shurly if it was the board it wouldn't show at all ?

Edit. Yes it passed with all the 8gb in on the new board.

Re-run the memtest, and check again with Ubuntu. memtest86 can only check the full 8GB if it's all there and working.

Take the chip out and examine for bent or unusual looking pins. A reseat can't hurt... AMD chips do have the memory controller onboard (so does everything nowadays) but I've never heard of an IMC killing RAM. Voltage killing RAM, yes. Voltage killing the IMC, yes. Never the IMC killing RAM - not to say it's impossible though

I will do !

Allready done that. The cpu looks fine.

Go intel, sell it on flebay, there ive helped*

Thanks but no thanks :D

Obvious I know, but 32bit windows?

Good thought. But checked it allready lol

Im not sure if its the cpu now because i have clocked it to 4.5 and ita running fine and stable....

Im going to take my cpu, ram and board upto where i got my board and get them to put them in a replacement board and make sure its working.

Have you tried running with only 1 stick of ram and testing it in each slot to see if all the slots are working?

Computer wont post with ram in the 2 slots furthest away from the cpu.

This is what happened with my gigabyte. Which is why im asking if it could be my cpu as amd have a memory controller in them.
But my cpu is running fine. But maybe the memory controller dosnt work along side the rest..

Gonna take the board back tonight with mt cpu and ram. Get them to exchange thr board and test it with my cpu and ram. If it does the same thing it must be the cpu. If it works then i had bad luck in getting 2 defect boards.

Just out of interest, what voltage are you using on the memory?

I have 4 x 4GB installed, a mixture of patriot 2133 and corsair 2000 running at 1850MHz at 1.65V. Probably slightly overvolted for the current frequency but I did have them at 2000MHz previously at the same voltage.

I'm using 1.65v same as you and at 1600mhz, I did have it at 1789mhz but was UN stable.

Just got back from the store where i got my board from, they tested my ram, cpu and board free of charge, which was good.

anyway, turns out my cpu is busted.. well not busted, its the memory controller, it wont work with 8gb of ram, but will work perfectly fine with 4gb..

he said hes never seen this before, but there's a first for everything i guess.

so plan is now, is to sell my fx6300, and put some more money i don't have towards it and go buy a brand spanker.

i might even go for a 8350 this time, will have to see how funds go after iv sold of a few items.

thanks for all the help guys, really appreciate it.

You're having pretty awful luck. I've never heard of that either.

You can get the FX-6300 replaced under warranty with AMD? If you get a new one, get the 8320, not the 8350. Which board do you have? Not all of them are good with the 8 core Piledrivers.

i know, tell me about it lol..

i would send it back to AMD but i need my system and it takes ages to get it there and get it back, and theres the postage cost both ways..

i have the asus m5a97 le r2.0 board.

AMD won't charge you return postage, but it'll cost just under £10 to send it out to them.

That board will take an 8320. May not overclock brilliantly though.

I got told I had to pay it both ways, well that's not too bad at least.

To be honest there is nothing with my fx6300 if I only wanted 4gb lol, it clocks fine, it plays games fine and does well under prime.

And what is putting Me of sending it to amd is, is the waiting time, iv allready lost 4 days of my system because of this with the mobo and cpu. So just gonna get a new one and at least I get a year's warranty with it and I can just nip up the road.

Just been thinking, I'm just ghz get another fx6300, they are good chips and I had this one clocked at 4.5 with ease lol, I'm happy with that.

:)

You'd be waiting a week or two for the replacement yeah so getting a new one is a good idea for you. If you send the old one back you should get a boxed replacement though, which you can sell as new.

FX-6300 overclocked to 4.5GHz will give better performance in most games than an 8350 at stock :)

i know i could do that, but i dont have the cash p front to buy one now, and wait untill i get a replacement lol :(

hence why i have to sell mine, and the 4gb xms3 1333 spare ram i have.

i have a few other bits to sell, like a 500g sata 2 hdd, and 4gb of ddr2 ram.

so with that i should get enough to buy another fx-6300 new, they are only £90 now.

4.5 is a good clock imo, and the temps were pretty good aswell, full load was only 49c. so still got 10c to play with :D, might even try 4.7 or 4.8 when i get the new one, if the board will take it that is!

Ah right. You seem amazingly not bothered by all this happening ;)

As most games only use 2-4 cores, the 6300 will perform basically identically to an 8320/8350 at the same clocks for those, and the 6300 can usually clock higher because of the fewer cores.
