i think that my processor is holding me back in a lot of games and for some reason most of my games run better with it at stock speeds than when its at 3ghz. i think its time for me to upgrade but i have no idea what to go for  id like to stick with my motherboard if i can so something with the same socket would be ideal

here is my current spec

Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 @ 3Ghz
Nvidia GTX280
SB Audigy 2 ZS Audio
Corsair 4GB DDR2 XMS2 PC2-6400C5 TwinX
Abit IP35
Corsair HX 620W Psu
120gig Maxtor SATA
300gig Maxtor SATA

well i noticed that i was getting stuttering in farcry 2 when i had it at 3ghz but since i have dropped it back to stock speeds it not happening anymore, i was also getting slowdown in crysis when it was overclocked but thats gone now too

it was stable in prime95 for over 6 hours so im a bit confused about why it performs better at stock speeds

Sometimes clocking can mess with PCI-E speeds. Try clocking the CPU again and verify that the PCI-Express slot is running at the full x16

thanks, ill give that a try tonight and let you know how it goes, any idea where i would find the pcie speed in bios? i dont recall seeing it

thanks, i just gave it a try and it seems to be running at the correct speeds

here is how my bios settings look and a screenshot from the gpu program

and how's performance? I really don't see how it could be worse at 3ghz than 2.4....are you sure?

well the framerate seems higher at 3ghz but every few seconds its as if it skips a few frames, i noticed it most when driving vehicles in farcry 2 & when running through the city in the witcher

Are you positive there's not something else responsible? Virus protection....some other background program accessing the HD?

i do have norton antivirus installed but would that cause this kind of problem? another thing that i noticed was that the stuttering goes away in farcry2 when i run it in DX9 mode

could well be, ill try a fresh install of windows in a few days and see if that helps
thanks for all the suggestions and help ;)
