Hoping you guys can help me out as i'm not in a position to spec. a build myself. Horribly out of date with tech and am looking to upgrade from a predominantly now 7-year old i5 750 system i've been slapping stop-gap upgrades to over the years. I have a 390x i'm happy to bolt in that is still usable if it allows me to upgrade elsewhere for value. Existing monitor is a 23" Samsung 120Hz that i'm also happy to keep in service until tech actually goes anywhere, though i've been looking for a good upgrade for about two years now. Rest of the build will have to be completely new. Peripherals are already covered.

Very much predominantly an FPS gamer so will be looking to run Destiny 2, Overwatch and Battlegrounds at a good framerate. Looking at a four to five year lifespan for the core build so some futureproofing would be appreciated. Happy to build from parts but the convenience of a pre-build would be a bonus (having had to remove the front plate of the 390x and reattach in situ to fit it in my current case I can do without repeat hassle).

Any help anyone can offer would be appreciated thanks.

probably dont need to spend all those prices, but to make good use of the budget then maybe something like this to get the ball rolling

My basket at Overclockers UK:

Total: £1,183.54
(includes shipping: £13.20)

or as you would probably prefer a pre-built then maybe one of these will tick the box?

while you mention to keep your 390x, unless you get a barebones kit then better graphic cards will be an option like the 1070 in this build for example.

for gaming go Intel and wait for 8700K. No build will last you 5 years. While the CPU may well last that long, the GPU will need replacing once at the 2.5 year mark to stay current.

Looking at a similar situation myself but have been out the loop for so long.

I'm definitely staying in the Nvidia camp but see many specs picking the Ryzen CPUs in here. Also picked up more than once that people should hold out for the new Intel processor.

I want to dabble with PC gaming again but don't want to spend too big. Are the new Intel's going to be worth it over the Ryzen systems for a semi serious gamer?

its holding out for better value if you are after an Intel CPU- the game shakers will be i3 and i5 K models, For £380-410 you can get 1400-1600 4/8 - 6/12 core with board and 16GB so they'll have to match that. Im personally wanting to see if the i3 can be overclocked with a stonking speed, spared with 3200 ram that can be pushed to 3666hz overclock and if a £100-120 board can match the quality of AMD B350 chip set and Gigabyte/Asus Gaming/Strix board we all recommend

Thanks for the input folks, went for a Ryzen 1600 build and managed to get a 1070 into budget so set for next little while.

Went for a configured prebuild off the site. Could have stretched to a 1080 but decided it was overkill for what I needed with the current monitor. Not going to be running 4k any time soon so happy enough.
