Can someone spec me the cheapest way to get my son online with MarioKart, cable modem

Routers are pretty cheap nowadays and the PC won't have to be on with one. It also has many other uses.

Edit: ^Do NOT do that! The DS only communicates with routers and the 2 USB adapters made specifically for it withour driver modifications.

I think you should be able to put a WiFi card in the PC (attached to the modem) and set up an ad hoc WiFi connection to the DS. This should work if you set the WiFi card in the PC to bridge the DS and cable modem connections.

edit: doesn't work according to the above post

any cheapy cable router that supports 802.11b or any usb/pci wireless adaptors that can also work as an access point (a lot do via software).
I suspect the early linksys wireless routers would do it (or even just work as an access point), and be fairly cheap.

Or there are two specific dongles available that will do it, one made by nintendo (it's actually a buffalo one rebadged with some software), or a cheaper one made by a third party (about £18 online).

The USB adapter would be the cheapest way and you can carry it around and play wherever there is an internet connection but it requires that the PC is always on. I would go for the router mainly for that reason.
