Put simply, I'm looking to build a gaming rig capable of running Battlefield 3 at high graphical settings. I'm not concerned about having a shiny case, I just want a basic, but functional PC for gaming for as little as possible.

Can you guys help?

RECOMMENDED SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS
OS: WINDOWS 7 64-BIT
PROCESSOR: QUAD-CORE CPU
MEMORY: 4 GB
HARD DRIVE: 20 GB
GRAPHICS CARD: DIRECTX 11 COMPATIBLE WITH 1024 MB RAM (NVIDIA GEFORCE GTX 570 OR ATI RADEON 6950)
SOUND CARD: DIRECTX COMPATIBLE
KEYBOARD AND MOUSE
DVD ROM DRIVE

(Apparently)

I have a mouse, speakers and monitor, I'll be needing a keyboard but I won't be needing the OS.

Ideally, I would like the spend around £400 at the most on the PC, excluding peripherals.

Dual core will severly impact on the playability of BF3.
If a quad can be shoehorned into that in any way it will make a huge difference.

The cheapest i5 would cost £145.

An AMD quad core system build could be as follows:

AMD Phenom II X4 Quad Core 850 "95W Edition" 3.30GHz (Socket AM3) - Retail £77.99
(£64.99) £77.99
(£64.99)
OcUK GeForce GTX 460 768MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card - OEM £77.99

It's not so much a "one size fit all" scenerio...the i3 2100 is faster than/on par with overclocked Core2Quad and overclocked Phenom II X4 in games. And with that budget, he's not gonna be able to afford a faster CPU than a i3 2100.

£400 would only put together a i3 2100 with Windows 7 OEM with a sub £150 graphic card, and no budget for getting a decent sound card...money don't grow on trees unfortunately. Think the OP is a little bit overestimating what £400 would get him :D

Everything I've seen on BF3 suggests a slower clocked quad will yield greater FPS than a faster clocked dual.
For other games I'd agree, but not BF3 which is what he specifically asked about.

sorry to hijack but im looking at a similar build and the same price. Ive been looking at amd quad cores because they are cheap and have 4 cores, does that table mean i can get more power from an i3 dual core? cheers
