Can someone tell me why?

I was messing around overclocking the card when i went to play CS source and the game locked up, i managed to get out and it said vpu recover at the right side of the taskbar.

I think i went over the limits of what other people get with these cards, so i opened cs source again and the same thing happened, it froze a few seconds after the game loaded..

I put the clocks back to default and games were still freezing, then i finally got a memory dump blue screen.

so i got an automatic reboot, made sure the clocks were still at default and they were. so since then its been working fine.. did a mild overclock since and no problems

Does anyone know what happened the first time? even though i went from unstable clocks to default clocks the game still kept locking up, unless something screwed up and the clocks were still in effect until i rebooted? didnt know this was possible

also, while i tried to fit the card it wouldnt go in the slot.. one of the metal plate things on the end of the card was bent so used pliers to bend it a bit

This is the most likely explanation.

Alternatively (but less likely) it could have been a purely software-based issue. The crash due to the first overclock could have spat out some dodgy data into the wrong place (probably somewhere in the DX API or maybe a driver call...), which was accessed again when you tried to run the other games. This can sometimes happen when a program closes unexpectedly, in the middle of an operation.

In this second case, a reboot would have restored everything to the default (HDD-saved) values restoring working order.

In future, overclock bit by bit and test using something intensive like 3dmark, and increase the core and memory clocks separately until you get artifacting (then back off a bit).
