can the 7v mod damage power supplies?

to quieten down the annoyingly loud fan in my case i put it to 7v using the 12v to positive, 5v to negative mod, but i have heard this can damage power supplies, has it ever damaged one or is it just people being paranoid? the power supply is an antec earthwatts 380w.

I've ran this mod now for ooh a good 4/5 years on my cheiftec power supply in my brothers pc and its still working fine.

I've always done this in the past and never had a PSU die on me.

I can't remember off the top of my head but it basically involves swapping the position of some cables. Google is your friend.
