Can the cpu game at 1440p

My friend is running a xeon e3 1241v3 (i7 4970?) And a rx470 gpu. He asked me will his cpu be upto 1440p gaming on AAA titles if he picks up a gtx 2060 super.

I know on 4k the cpu would be ok as the gpu would hit it limits first but with his cpu not been over-lockable I don't know if it will be ok at 1440p high settings.

Anyone rocking a none k haswell at 1440? Input would be fantastic

Hell yah it can. At 1440, it is the gpu that might struggle first.

If you mean a 4790 then you’re good to go. I’ve got the low powered version (4790T) with a 1070Ti and it runs games at 1440 no bother at all. Doom runs at 4K@60hz so if you use that as a benchmark then you get a good idea of what does/ doesn’t run at decent frame rates.

If he isn't trying to go over 60hz then it's fine, my 3770k wasn't too bad it was just the minimums that were an issue.

Depends on the age and style of games. Using my previous example, on my machine Doom runs close to 120fps at 1440hz with a few settings dialled down from Ultra. Indie games tend to have frame rates way above 60fps. In the OPs case, the GPU is the limiting factor, not the CPU and a 2060 will handle the vast majority of games just fine at 1440p.

Why? 5700XT is faster at same price.

As for the main question depends games. Planning to play new games? Then Ryzen 3600/X is the go to budget CPU atm.
Get it with a good Gigabyte/MSI motherboard (make sure has 32MB bios) and good 16GB 3600C16 ram (cost around £129) and can upgrade up to 16 core CPU this year and next year.
For less than £410 can have motherboard (B450 Tomahawk Max), Ryzen 3600 and 16GB 3600C16 Samsug b-die and a heatsink.

But in that case he would still need a new gpu so you 410 is plus the 360. And the 300 for monitor.
A small upgrade just went over a £1000 he will not do that

Your initial post implies that the GPU is already on "different budget". Not all together.
So tell us the budget for everything and see what we can come up with.

The spec says it as a lower base clock but the same turbo.

He already owns the system. The question is will his current cpu cope with 1440p gaming if the gpu is changed as we all know his rx470 will not do it

A 5 year old Xeon at 3.9Ghz won't cut the mustard even if you put a 2080Ti.

So need full budget to see what we can do. Has your friend considered how much money going to get from his current system?

A 5 year old i7/xeon can handle 4k gaming. I dont think your the person I need to talk to on this subject as you clearly have no idea.

In 4k gaming the gpu is under so much load that the cpu required is not so important.. the question was at 1440p with a 2060 super what will the loads be like.
Look at the other posts people with older cpus are doing it just fine

I've used a 4770 with a 1080ti at 1440p
It will handle it but if you want 144 fps you'll need to change cpu

The monitor he as seen is 75hz

Would the 2060super be the right choice, for the same price he can pick up a 1080ti used or I have been told the amd new stuff is better

Garbage. As I’ve said previously, I can game at 4K on a 4790 with a 1070Ti.

I agree. Upgrading to the 2060 will make the system well balanced able to handle 1440.
