Can the next General Election be delayed beyond Jan 2025?

Can the date of the general election be put back? Let's say Sunak stays to the bitter end, setting the date of the next general election as Jan 26th (maybe Jan 27th) 2025. Shortly before that date something happens - maybe there's big snowstorm, a red weather alert affecting much of the UK, another Storegga Slide that inundates the east coast, a huge earthquake along the Great Glen, or maybe there's a measles outbreak. Or whatever, but nothing so serious as war, and nothing political. Regardless of the cause it is going to prevent significant numbers of people from getting to the polling booths on polling day and it's too late to send out postal voting forms. Can the date of the general election be put back? As a whole? How about on a constituency by constituency basis?

Greta Thunberg dictates the weather. If we have a 40C summer again, it's because Greta dictated it.

Rishi said 2nd half of 2024. I interpret that as being the bitter end i.e. Jan 2025.

Greta dictates blizzards with 6 feet of snow (because she can) in Jan/Feb 2025.

The election is then pushed back to May 2025, bringing it back in line with the normal time of the year for elections, albeit a year too late.

I mean, given that we don't have a written constitution and it's just casually re-interpreted to suit the government of the day. I imagine any actual limit on not having elections would need to be enforced by the citizens.

Normally a GE is announced/called 25 working days before..
Parliament is dissolved and everyone goes in to campaign mode…

Having a January election is highly unlikely as Christmas/new year holidays will interrupt the campaigning period, thou it would lovely gift.

But with the torries being torries…

If there is heavy snow or other bad weather on election day, can it be moved to another day? - Jonathan Corp

The election would go ahead even in a blanket of snow, because it is written in law. It cannot be postponed unless the law is changed.

I’m sure the local representatives of the parties would arrange for mr plow to clear the snow and Moses to part the seas if it gets really biblical to get people to the polling stations…

Remember if the local Tory representatives comes pass your bed room window in a boat asking you if you’re going to vote for him.. you can lie just to get a ride to the polling station. :)

If a general election isn't called this year then it will raise more questions than it answers.

There's no way the tories can avoid it unless they go full on Russia stylee.

Won't happen in May, it will be in autumn

Local elections, like the London mayoral election, were postponed by a year due to the pandemic and the general election was postponed during WWII. I don’t think it’s ever been postponed due to bad weather though. Perhaps voting would be extended for a day?

Where is this thread even coming from?

We have rules/laws etc, we might not like the government that we have, we might want to get them out as soon as possible, and that will happen, just let it happen under the normal rules..

We aren't in a pandemic or a world war, so I'm going to assume that like all incumbents, they'll stay in for as long as they can when they know the writing is on the wall, they'd only do it at the earliest convenience if they felt things would go their way.

If that is technically Jan 25th, then I guess that will be it.. you never know, Rishi might give us a Christmas present of a pre-Christmas election, but as usual I'll probably just get a lump of coal..

Just need to pap Starmer trying to eat a bacon sandwich and then we'll call the next election lol..

If its true that some 45% of voters are still undecided results will be interesting..

What do you think will happen when a considerable part of the population - for whatever reason - cannot vote on the day? Surely we must have some sort of procedure, some arcane law, to cope with this?

could it happen, technically maybe
will it happen, no

Did you predict Covid? But there have been massive snowstorms before - go back to the 1950s and 60s. More recently there was the great storm of 1987 which downed trees all over a large part of the country, blocking transport.

I think Dec 16th or 17th is the last possible day that Sunak can call a general election and if he doesn't the election gets called automatically anyway, but the election itself is 4-5 working weeks later and the turn of the year has 4 days of holidays.
