Can the PS3 or 360 stream hi-def mkv files?

Quick question, ive hooked up my ps3 and 360 wired, after having them previously wireless.

I have got streaming of xvid media fine to my 360 from my pc, but wondered if theres anyway to stream hi-def, any program i can run that will decode it on the fly or something.

They can, but they have to be remuxed first.

Sure, you can go with TVersity or something, but that will give you poorer quality, as the PC is decoding and then sending down the network.

If you get MKV2VOB, it doesn't reencode anything (it CAN if is has to, but so far, it's never done so on all the 720p TV mkvs I've tried) it just takes maybe up to a minute to demux and remux the file so the PS3 can play it, and that's it.

So it is [the ps3] playing the original video, without any transcoding, and only takes a min to do. It's no hassle, I do it regularly.

Just google for mkv2vob, and put the resulting .mp4 file into your shared folder for streaming.
Quick, easy, whilst retaining the full quality of the file. V2.24 is the latest version that you'll be wanting.

Vin.

EDIT: Streaming these HD files via wireless can be hit and miss. I found my wireless connection struggled to keep up, and jerked a bit. Going to a cabled connection plays them fine. Alternatively, if you HAVE to use wireless, you can just copy the .mp4 to your PS3 over the network, and play locally, and just delete it when done.

EDIT2: If you're running Media Player 11 to stream, by default, it doesn't pick up .mp4 files. There's a registry hack which does make it see them. Again, no hassle, you only have to run it once, and then mp4 files appear in the media library, and therefore also on the PS3. I can always send you a copy if needs be, or just paste it into a post here, so you can save it as your own .reg file.

I use a program called WME Assistant and it converts MKV to WMV perfectly. I don't notice any lost of quality and the most important thing it supports 5.1 audio.

same here - mkv2vob and play on ps3.

I THINK you can output as mp4 or avi, and the 360 may then be able to play these also... it could play the HD DIvX films i tried...

Yip, loving MKV2VOB. Just remember to use the Configuration tab first. :P

I think i might buy a 1TB hard drive and store all my HD films on it.

Another vote for mkv2vob. Use the x264 codec and make sure u set the file splitting to fat 32.

I don't follow, you don't need MKV2VOB to encode anything, so it doesn't matter what you set the transcoding codec to.

So far, I've downloaded quite a few 720p x264 TV series, the latest being Eureka.

I feed it in, it says "Transcode - NO"

and a minute later, the file is ready for playing on the PS3.

You don't need to split the files if you stream them, assuming you have NTFS drives in your PC?

Because there's no transcoding going on, it makes no difference what the encoder setting is set to. In other words, the quality of the file from MKV2VOB is exactly the same as the original, no decoding/encoding has occured, it's just been remuxed so the PS3 can play it.

If you're using TVersity to stream to the PS3, I assume you have the transcoder disabled? Otherwise you're taking a quality hit there too.

I only mention these, as surely the whole point in using mkv HD files, is to retain as much video quality as possible?

Vin.

EDIT: and I'm not trying to sound all smart arsey about it, although my post my sound like it. I'm just confused, as it's such a simple process, I don't see the need to overcomplicate anything. I download an MKV. I load it into MKV2VOB, out pops an .mp4 file, which I copy to my media player library shared folder on my server. The PS3 plays it. No splitting, no encoding, it's no hassle at all.
