You know that XBONE advert where the Breaking Bad lad is playing and he does voice commands... and one of them basically has him playing his game on the left and then on the right of the screen he has live TV or smoething running as well.

Now im not sure if that is console controlled or something that a TV has to have to allow it, but if it is console controlled and works on any TV/Monitor that the console is attached to, can i do this with the PS4?

Basically I want to play a game and at the same time have the BBC World Cup game running at the same time on the same screen.

If possible, any help to achieve this would be appreciated.

You can do it if you own a TV with PIP functionality.

It doesn't work the exact same way as the advert though and it depends on the tv in question.

Sometimes 80% of the screen will be one input and then in the corner of the screen the other input will be overlayed on top (so your missing a corner of the first input).

I believe there is also tv's that do it same as what the xb1 does.

I think anyone who has ever used such a system agrees that it is very much a gimmick. For instance it's pretty much impossible to be focusing on both at the same time. It's also impossible to have sound running from both at the same time (or else it will sound all muddled up).

So therefore you can game with sound and have world cup running with no sound but your so immersed in the game you don't notice the half of the screen the football is on, neither can you hear it to know what is going on. therefore your pointlessly wasting half the screen.

there is an example of PIP in action

I believe my samsung plasma supports it but my panasonic doesnt

if you want to watch the football then watch the football, if you don't then game. pretty simple.

I've tried it a few times but it just feels like the video is way too small for me to enjoy it. I usually just have something on my other monitor as I find it a bit better instead of having to squint my eyes to see whats going on.

I guess it comes down to the size of the screen you're playing on. The snapped TV looks plenty big enough on a 55" screen, not that I personally use it very often.

Not as simple if he wants to do both.

The snap function works great on Xbox One, however I agree the screen is quite small

Second screen, tablet, smartphone, etc are all options available to me to do both, as well as PIP built into my tv.

It's pointless though as you cannot really focus on two completely different images at the same time, regardless of screen size. You can quickly change focus from one to the other but you cannot really focus on both at the same time.

Basically your constantly having to switch from one to the other, it's physically impossible to be focused on both things.

Especially if the other thing is gaming where the player needs to keep their focus and respond to things happening on screen, etc. What is either going to happen is he's going to perform badly in the game, or he is going to ignore the football for 90% of the time.

It is very much a gimmick. Why do you think flagship TV's no longer come with this feature but they used to in the past?

What you can do is play a game and have another source taking up a large portion of the screen to glance at every now and then.

What is the point though? He won't be able to enjoy the second source fully and it detracts from the first source.

Some retard at MS obviously thought this would be a great idea and it's what was missing from a games console and people agreed with him it would be cool. Like I said before I tried it many years ago when TV's had PIP built in, it was crap and pointless, it looked like a good idea but it just doesn't work.

He would be better off running a phone/tablet and streaming the game to have a glance at every now and again instead of having to share his main tv.

This is now being phased out of tv's because it didn't catch on.

Regardless of whether it worked for you, it's good to at least have the option. I don't personally use it very often, but I do now and again.

I watch a lot of TV Shows/movies while playing games, never been a problem for me. I enjoy it.

I never understand people who do this. My mate at work does this and he said he ends up rewinding loads as keeps missing interesting bits

Just seems a very odd thing to do for films/TV shows. Sports I can understand.

I only do it with games that I don't really have to pay much attention to. I never really have to rewind unless I miss subtitles due to different languages.

Its great when playing MMOs, Football Manager, etc
