Can this be done?

I have three monitors, but I'll be playing most games on the centre only (as the outer monitors are different resolutions. I might use SoftTH on less demanding games - like COD4). Is it possible to use a PCI GPU to control the outer two, and still use SLI/Crossfire on the middle one?

If I understood right you have 2 cards in SLI and another separate graphic card?

Sorry I don't quite get it what you want to do and why you want to do it. Could you explain it a little bit more please

please do. I'm a bit confused.

If you have two cards in SLI, then you can control 3 monitors from those two and game on them.

You can use the PCI GPU to run a third monitor if you wish

If only!

If you have SLI, you can only run three or more monitors if the monitors are all the same:
  1. Orientation (portrait/landscape)
  2. Resolution
  3. Refresh rate

Otherwise you're limited to two different monitors, even between the two cards. If you want to run all three monitors, then you have to disable SLI, and run up to two screens off each.

What I'm therefore wondering is: can you configure it so the SLI'd cards only run the centre/main screen, and have an auxiliary card (like a PCI 8400GS) to run the other two (lesser resolution) screens, or would this still sacrifice SLI?

EDIT: just re-read my original post and I didn't make myself very clear vis-a-vis the monitors. I have a Dell 3007WFP as the centre monitor (2560x1600), and a 2001FP at each end in portrait mode (1200x1600)

ohhhh! I thought they were all the same for some reason even though you said they were different in the op. faillol!

Can't you use the SLI cards to run the 30" and the PCI card to run the two 20"'s? Both the 20's are portrait, same res and same refresh rate are they not?

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can, as nvidia cards are very restrictive and only let you use up to two monitors but that should be fine

That's what I'm wondering. I mean, I can't see why not, but then, I can't see why Surround and Eyefinity limit you to one res per screen, when Matrox and SoftTH can allow you to fiddle with almost any resolution.
