You're right - looking here two 460s in SLI beat a 480 pretty convincingly in most cases for the same price...

However going sli means you need a more expensive mobo that supports it like this Gigabyte UD4, but it just about comes in on budget...

That I think would offer much better gaming performance than the i7 single 470 spec. You could always keep to a single GPU solution with a 480 which allows you to save £40 on the mobo, but performance not quite as good. The i5 760 should see you to 4GHz no problem (my 750 does it fine), though I think it's correct to say an i7 might clock a little higher, say 4.2GHz, but I still dont think it's worth the extra for gaming to go 1366 platform i7.
