I don't want another civ game after this one , but a new Alpha Centauri would be an INSTANT buy! Anyone else agree?

About the Classic below

Sid Meier's Alpha Centauri, FIRAXIS' second title, was released in February 1999. This epic science fiction turn-based strategy game takes Sid's legendary gameplay into the 22nd century, offering the perfect balance of exploration, discovery, empire building and conquest. Since its release, Alpha Centauri has become one of the best-selling games around the world. In September 1999, FIRAXIS further enhanced the Alpha Centauri experience with the release of Sid Meier's Alien Crossfire, nominated for 1999 "Expansion Pack of the Year".

i agree too.

never really got into the civ series, but played alpha centuri to death.

would love a new updated version of it

A hundred times yes. The civs are repeating themselves a bit too much at this point. Alpha Centauri was different enough and an absolutely fantastic game in its own right. It was superior to the civs in many ways, and was incredibly well balanced. I think it would certainly be a good idea to diverge away from their old formula for their next game.

I'm surprised there hasn't been a successful fan mod using a newer engine (Civ 4 for example) of this so far tbh.

The trouble is that the all the Civ engines to date have been far too restrictive :(
No deformable terrain is one of the biggest issues, and there are others too.

I'd also note that Firaxis is now missing Brian Reynolds, & TBQH things have been going downhill ever since he left. In my opinion, SMAC & Civ II were the pinnacle, and everything since then has basically been prettying up things, while removing features by stealth :o

Nothing much wrong with the original either TBQH, although I wouldn't mind some texture upgrades and a better AI.

No way, i had a case of proper insane hallucination flu when it was out, i had the week off school and tried to play it, later that day i thought my duvet was a mindworm boil trying to eat me alive.

I snapped the thing to bits, disks and all.

Now that's funny , thanks for the late night chuckle :D

You do know that Firaxis cant legally make an Alpha Centauri sequel because EA stole and own the rights to it?

Its up to EA to find a studio to make it, and the only way that Firaxis can make it is if EA acquire them again.

If Firaxis had also released a Civ Game while under EA, there wouldnt have been anymore Civ games either, at least not by Firaxis / Sid Meier. It would have ended up like the C+C series.

why cant they create a spiritual successor under a different name like supcom but without the crapness

im surprised its been so long since a new Alpha Centauri game considering how popular it is

I don't think it would provide much tho really. A player mod would be great but i wouldnt buy a retail copy.

It was important because it gave us so many of the concepts and art format of civ 2 especially borders and added diplomacy.

I did like the customization of units, it did give birth to some that if i mention now to a friend will have us both in stitches, sad miss spent childhood or what....

Good idea, never played AC and suspect it is a bit too dated now (even allowing for the fact that TBS games probably date slower than most genres).

Downloaded it to see what it was like years ago but it was pretty average. Birth of the Federation is where its at. Which is being remade into a brand new game which is being actively developed by a small group which i know.

There is a Civ4 Mod which emulates AC- It is called PlanetFall, iirc it was included with my steam copy of Civ4, just look in the mod menu.

+1 to a remake however.

would also love to see a remake, played the original tons back in the day, along with the legendary birth of the federation, another game i would love to see a remake of, shame they keep remaking the crappy civilisations games since they are well...rubbish! :D

so +1 for more strategy games with more depth, options, etc. getting abit tired of RTS all emulating the C&C series and games like BOTF and AC disappearing. :(

sorry but as much as i adored BOTF supremacy is just never gonna be released, been following it for several years and absolutely no progress seems to be made, like ever, like 99% of mods it never sees the light of day unfortunately. :( been following one for sins as well for what seems like ever, called dawn of victory, they keep releasing fancy pictures but never seems to happen. verging on giving up entirely on successful mods personally, PC gaming just isn't what it used to be...:(
