Can we let the overkill logic die? (Rant)

Don't know what you're getting at with that. Unless you can predict the future and know otherwise... there's almost always a better card on the way, so planning to keep current tech for a long time is a bad idea.

If people are really into gaming any mid range or better card from the last few years will be fine. For hardcore gamers image quality does not matter that much, what really counts is gameplay.

Image quality in gaming is good for only about 5% or less of the enjoyment you can get from the title. Lets be honest you don't notice the image quality after the first 5mins or so even when using a stack of Titans in SLI.

What a load of sillies. Best bang for buck near budget is the way i had a budget for a 290x for my 720p screen at the time which was overkill and instead opted for a still overkill 290 because it was only 12% difference for 30% price. The same way after using a 390 at 4k until it died I had about a 500 budget but got a 580£ 1080ti. Bang for buck as 15% more cost for 30% performance.
Often you see these swaps for bang for buck bit it's always in a similar tier card I rarely see a 1080 becoming a really good offer on a 1060

It's a bit disingenuous to claim there's no such thing as overkill. The implication being that there will never be a scenario where you are wasting money going for a higher end GPU when a cheaper one will suffice. The honest answer is it depends on ALL the variables. Or if it is indeed true then why have all those people who claim this as a fact not got Titan Xp's?

For example, if someone has a 60Hz 1080p monitor and they use V-Sync because they hate tearing and they are also not interested in upgrading that monitor. Then a 1080Ti is indeed be overkill in that specific scenario.

The standardised name, Ultra Settings, is an industry-wide con to keep people on the upgrade treadmill ;)

"I run at Ultra" = a mark

Not from a game devs point of view, it is very much in their interest to get titles to run on as low as spec GPU as possible.

If a game will only run on the fastest GPUs the game devs are not going to sell many copies.
