Asking cos i had a GP at home, then signed up to one at uni, and the 1 at home said im not with them anymore as i have registered elsewhere, fair enough i thought, if thats a rule.

but anyway i need to see a GP about a minor problem, but im not gona trek all the way to uni just for that, and a friend says that 1 of her friends has a GP at uni, and 1 at home, they she told them she needed one while shes at home, so they sorted it

is this true? can you be with more then 1 gp?

thanks

You can see any NHS GP you like if the need arises. I can't imagine you'll need a dual membership unless you have to go there a lot.

You can go on a temporary register at a GP if you have two addresses. Whenever I need a doctor when I'm back in Ireland I just sign up on the temporary register. I tried to sign up with two GP's, one at home and one here in England but whenever I registered with one, my registration with the other seemed to be automatically cancelled.

Yeah it dosn't really matter. You just fill in a form to say your a visitor at the doctors your at, and they just let you see someone.

I have been here for 8 years and haven't registered with a GP the only time I needed the doc was when I got hit by a car and when I ran my motorbike into a pole ( I came off second best both times :( )

as said it's not possible to be registered at two gp's
your details get updated on a national system, so when you register with one you'll get unregistered at another
i've never had a problem with it, i'm registered at one up here in manchester but when i had to see one at home for some reason i just went in, and they still have my records stored so it was all fine
however
that is variable depending on your local dr's
part of the reason for the new IT system is the inconsistency with how gp's keep records etc

You can't be registered at two GPs - but the GP at home will agree to see you as a visiting patient. The only issue will be that your records won't all be present.

A few of the towns around here have medical centre that you can go to for minor problems regardless of registration. Can't remember the name they use for them but, the nearest one to me is actually in the grounds of the hospital itself and now the doctors surgery has a minor injuries unit there so anyone near can go there too.

EDIT: I almost always see a doctor which isn't my registered GP but, his in the same practice. Never had a problem with that.
