Ive asked my mum to bring some tootsie rolls back with her, but she's not sure about the rules on bringing back food/sweets from america?

Can anyone shed some light please?

Fruit, vegetables, sherbet (lol), carbonated drinks, plants/flowers/seeds and meat are generally no no's.

I think a bag or roll of sweets, bar of chocolate is ok. Check with the airline, and the airports first if you're in any doubt.

Would it need to be in hand luggage or her suitcase?

Suitcase more than likely....As you're not allowed to take drinks / food onto planes unless it's brought after the scanning bit.

Get some of those Gourmet Jelly Beans! Mix different ones up to make new flavours, they are awesome! Oh, and Peanut Butter M&Ms :D

We carried doughnuts through security in our handluggage last week. No questions asked.

You can't take liquids of more than 50ml though (like flying out of the UK).

I would imagine food is fine.

Food is fine, only certain items of food (usually fruit, flora/fauna etc) can't be taken on board.

Flew to canada a few weeks ago with snacks in bag. My friend did have his apples confiscated though, because they're grown over there (avoiding cross-contamination, spread of disease etc)

I hauled 6 packs of milk duds back from Atlanta last time I was there, I didn't have any stick coming back through customs.

I believe there is an issue to do with e numbers

certain e numbers are banned here in the Uk that are legal in America and vice versa

If not then americansoda are very good and have most things american - they import it all and sell it over here.

We have just bought some original Mountain Dew, Mountain Dew Shock (raspberry and ginseng), some beef jerky, A&W creme soda and som Peanut Butter M&Ms :D

Only processed food items are allowed. i.e, not fresh. But only in your suitcase. So sweets should be fine but check with the airport/airline.

When I went last time I brought another suitcase full of american sweets and processed corn syrup laced crap which went through fine.

My parents brought me back some peanut butter M&Ms a few years back, the finest sweet i have ever tasted.
