hi all,

Can someone double check this plan for me please? Where most of my "infrastructure" is, there is no BT socket in that room, so I am planning to provide it with internet access from one of the two rooms where I have a BT socket, then put a switch in.

Am I right that I will need 6 powerlines in total for this to work? or 4?

I don't know if its because ive lost my mind because I've been decorating all day or just that I'm generally thick, but I can't work out how the poweline where the switch is manages to handle all comms with the other 3. So the idea for 6 was that I'd need a pair for each networked item

Is it a new phone line install by BT? If so, they can relocate the master socket for you. Mine was moved when FTTC was installed.

Well I am hoping not because of the extra cost. It's a new o2 contract which I told them "I have a master socket" so there is an openreach appointment booked, so I am assuming they'll just say "yep, there's a master socket" and hook me up with o2 in the exchange.

While I have you knowledgable chaps, could you just confirm for me these sockets?

This is the one in the middle bottom room in the picture:

I took it apart just to take it off the wall earlier when I was painting :P I'm assuming this is the one the previous house owners were using.

Then I found these chaps in the bottom left room, one says PCS on it, and the second is linked to the first, any idea what it is!? I would prefer to use the second lot if it gives me a bandwidth from my ISP roughly equivalent to the socket above ^^

edit: oh balls, trying to sort out resolution now!

normal, any idea what the difference between the sockets are? Is it possible to

1) have two master sockets and
2) to have a master socket split into two which is how it appears it's done in the last pic?

tbh from the pics i wud say the 1 with pcs is the master.

the double is just an extension so not a master at all.

not sure about the 1 in the middle room.

previous owners might have had another installed or had a second phone number

yea I thought that, in the room with the PCS was the old owner's study and he ran his own business so I do wonder if that was his business line, and the one in the middle room is the home master socket. I suppose when BT openreach do their stuff later this month I can go around with a phone plugging it into each socket and seeing if it works or not, and testing the speeds!

Can you tell from the top pic if that master socket could benefit from an "I plate" ?
