Can you download & play PS2 games on the 40gb PS3?

I know the 40gb can't play PS2 games via disc but can you download them via PSN?

PS2 games aren't available for download via PSN, PS1 games are.

It would be nice for Sony / whoever to remake some PS2 games for PSN though
