can you get a VGA to DVI adapter?

I have read some sites google which are selling VGA to DVI scalers are these the same thing as adapters?
Is it best to just go for a cable which is 1 end VGA and the other end DVI?
What's the cheapest method?
Also i am trying to connect my old laptop to my projector, as far as i remember my laptop max resolution is 1280x1024 it's about 8 years old, it was not for gaming, could play no games, it was just for internet use and general use. So i am not sure if it even supports 1280x720 resolution is there any software i can use to get it to that resolution which will match the projector that i have which it's native resolution is 1280x 720p?

Edit: Actually guys, i already have another laptop which is connected via DVI to my projector, my projector only has 1 DVI port, and i really don't want to unplug that every time i want to plug in my old laptop, so is there a way to leave the current DVI cable plugged in my projector but take the other end which is in my laptop and put a VGA adapter on the end and then plug it into my old laptop which has just 1 VGA port?
Edit: My Laptop i believe is about 9 years old, it could be more and it has an 8GB hardrive and cd rom drive, it is running windows 98, i would want to install XP on it, i have an external harddrive which is 500GB USB2.0 and the laptop has USB1.0 but the 500GB harddrive is backwards compatible with USB1.0, the external harddrive has loads of games, and movies on it, and i was thinking is it possible to install windows xp on the external harddrive and then boot up always the laptop while it is connected to the external harddrive? Also how many GB does XP take up?

check your laptop specs first... some only out put to dvi.. so a dvi to vga adapter wouldnt help.... most out put both but check before you buy :d
