I thought they were pushing the whole "you can't escape our database" etc.?

Or was that all hot air?

They know which cars are not taxed, but they don't know if any of them are being used on the road unless they're caught.

I thought they just issued the fine for not taxing or declaring SORN though?

I didn't realise you still have to be caught on the roads.

I ask this as I did the same thing today. 110 mile round trip with an out of date tax disc and no tax. :o

But it doesn't matter if they are on the road or not. A vehicle should be taxed or SORN. if Neither then the owner is liable.

Yeah but rather than act like the Gestapo, they don't fine you the second your car has no tax. At this time, you may have the thing stuffed away in your garage, or you may be still driving it, they just don't know.

They do send a fine out if its not taxed or SORN even if its just sitting in your garage. Takes them a couple of weeks though. Or did with me (forgot to SORN a car i was taking to bits) My sister was driving about for about two weeks with no tax also before i noticed (typical woman) and she sorted it out 3! yes 3 days later...

If the police catch you on the road and its only one day out you may get away with it. If the DVLA van catches you. Expect a fine and a clamp at the least
