Can you have 4 identical DIMMS running in dual channel mode?

Sorry for the long title! I was thinking of upgrading my memory to 2gb before installing Vista. I already have 2x 512mb DDR 400 DIMMs running in dual channel mode on an Asus motherboard but the Kingston site says:

"Per ASUS, for stable performance use a maximum of two DIMM sockets when using Dual Channel mode and DDR400 modules."

It sounds as if I install another pair of 512mb DIMMs they won't work in dual channel mode or even worse, the whole lot will become unstable?

Does anyone have any experience of running more than 2 DIMMS in dual channel mode?

I had 4x 256mb dimms running in dual channel mode on my Asus P4C800-E but have since upgraded to 2x 1gb

I've tested with 4 x 512MB in a few motherboards and it's not just the CAS latency etc timings that need to be the same as there are many sub timings and all four modules need to work at the BIOS auto/manually configured settings.

I suggest you try to sell your current memory and buy a 2GB kit (2 x 1GB).

It can be done, I'm currently running 4x512MB of Geil DDR400 in my rig (check sig), all in dual channel.

I've got to agree with str though, I'm probably going to buy a 2GB set and sell my current RAM so that I've got room to upgrade with another 2GB if I feel the need...
