I dont understand what this means... .. the character Ravi, is a young boy who in the story learns about how in life you wont be the centre of attention in the world and he is maturing etc ...

This is an extract from an essay about the story talking about the writer:

"Her narrative strategy of shifting the omniscient point of view to the limited third-person vantage allows the reader to gain leisurely insights into the inner workings of Ravi's mind."

what does it mean by 'third person vantage' ??

The story is "Games at twilight" by Anita Desai by the way :)

It sounds like the book switches, from Ravi telling the story, to occasional bits of information about Ravi told by a narrator. I guess the author felt that was necessary to make Ravi's part make sense?

(I have no idea about this book, and that sentence is bs)

"Her narrative strategy of shifting the omniscient point of view to the limited third-person vantage allows the reader to gain leisurely insights into the inner workings of Ravi's mind."

My guess is...during the story, she changed her narrative from omniscient (all-knowing) third person to linear third person - so that as the reader read along, they see events happen in the present as opposed to the author already knowing and warning/telling the reader about them. It means you can see 'Ravi's progression as a person through the events that shape him?!

After some more thought... i think it means that.... the point of view changes from the universally known mature point of view (about how the world doesnt revolve around you etc..) is changed to the childlike and simpler point of view (where they want to be noticed and the centre of attention) of ravi... so that we can "gain leasurely insights into the inner workings of Ravi's mind" :)

Thanks for all your help guys!!
