Can you install XP on a vista lappy and keep both?

I've done dual boot setup before but have always installed the oldest 1st then the new one.

My friends new lappy came with Vista x64 but he can't run the 3d gfx software he needs on vista.

Can he just install XP on as normal as a duel boot setup?

Also would a 2nd partition be the best idea?
