Cruical 8500 2x1 gig

fancied an upgrade - but seemed a bit pointless going for 4 gig since only 3 gig will be address in Vista 32

BUT can get Crucial 8000 2x512 at a very cheap price

so I'd end up with 3 gig .. but would I still keep dual channel I'm really not sure

so one set of banks would have 2 x 1 gig

the other set 2 x 512MB

thanks, Mark.

thanks very much :)

its just currently one can get Crucial 8000 - which is still D9 - for only about 42 pounds

probably worth a punt at that price to move from 2 gig to 3 gig in Vista ?

I mean its only 50% more .. but in effective free RAM after windows loading its probably about 75% more RAM

Mark.

With Vista yes the extra GB will come in handy.

well just looked at the manual !

and I can't fathom it out to be honest ...

Manual is about as useful as a fish ...

I quote

"You may install varying memory sizes in Channel A and Channel B. The system maps the total size of the lower-sized channel for the dual-channel configuration. Any excess memory from the higher-sized channel is then mapped for single-channel operation."

BUT Channel A and Channel B - but where Channel A = A1 + A2 (Yellow +Black) and Channel B = B1 + B2 (Yellow + Black)

???? I genuinely can't then work out what the manual manes ... what are these channels the manual talks about ?

now if it means you can put different memory sizes total in Channel A and B - well then the rest of the text is not relevant - as Channel A + B will be the same - each will be 1.5 gig ...

but if it means different memory sizes within Channel A and B - then only 1 gig (total - 2x512) -will be in dual channel mode ?

...the colors on the slots indicate matched channels....

So put the same memory sizes in those.

For example:

Yellow Black Yellow Black
------ ----- ------- -----
1gb 512mb 1gb 512mb

comprehende?
