Can you keep monkeys as pets in the UK?

A family down the road have a small monkey like pet. It slightly worries me as 1: im pretty sure your not allowed them in the UK any more and 2:they are PROPER PYKEY'S and their house is a state. They've have had dogs removed off them because they illtreated them. They cant even look after they own kids let alone a small monkey which has specific diet needs and lots of patience.

that chimp did that because the stupid b**** fed him human tablets like pain killers benzos and valium. -_- It wasnt even the woman who had the monekey who had her face ripped off, as far as i remember. Shame.

Report them to the RSPCA if you believe the animal is not getting the right treatment... not sure on the legal side of it but I believe you are allowed to keep them as pets, I remember as a kid there was a pet shop near my grandparents that sold them and had 2 in the window.

What type of monkey? If it's an endangered species then probably not but a common monkey I'm sure you can.

You can keep Tamarins etc in this country certainly.

Its very thin and small its about the size of a kitten with long thin arms and a big head. lol

There are estimated to be 1,500 monkeys alone being kept as pets in Britain.

As the post above if its not an endangered species you can - but some types may require an exotics pet license which AFAIK still means visits every 1-2 years from an inspector.

I know i cant be 100% sure but im pretty sure they dont have a licence. They ddont even have car insurance lol I wouldnt want to cause a lot of trouble by calling the RSPCA if im in the wrong (and there allowed to keep it) At the same time, i really dont feel its fair on an animal if its 1: not supposed to be kept as a pet and 2: if its beign illtreated. (i.e not being fed the right diet, kept in the right heat enviroment etc)

Awww yea thats the little guy! So its all legal? Nice to hear :D Id love a monkey my self, didnt think they could be kept in the UK tho and dont have the time to make sure i fulfill its needs. Im struggling keeping 2 rats, with work and other things. cheers for the links

Report them to the RSPCA

My gf used to work in an animal park, it will get rehomed and get proper care, as well as live with others of the same breed

Problem with keeping Monkeys is they are so similar to humans that they can catch the same bugs, especially cold, which can be lethal to them.:(

I am currently recruiting for my monkey army. If you can get it to agree to having a laser attached to its back, then pass on my details.

(The lasers currently weigh 6kg)

As previously mentioned... call the RSPCA
