Can you pair two SLI cards on any SLI-ready motherboard?

Hello. I've got a 6-month old SLI-ready motherboard. Currently I have two GeForce 6200 on them but I am planning to buy two GeForce 8800 series next week. Will my motherboard work OK or do I need get a new one for compatibility with new graphic cards?

Thanks in advance.

And what PSU? What monitor resolution? Do you really need 8800 SLI straight away? Why not just buy one, if you find performance lacking then add another. If you get 300fps max settings with 8800 SLI it's a bit pointless, as single card will be more than suitable framerate.

For someone who's used to using 2 x 6200's, you really dont need 2 x 8800's - they would probably be about 3 million times faster.

both PCI-E lanes need to run at 16x for 8800GTX/GTS to work in SLI.
what make is the motherboard you own?

You dont need 2x 16 pci-e lanes. I know it says it on OcUK website, but you dont. You can run them in 8x pci-e lanes without a performance hit.

My mate has them running on a dfi lanparty sli!

I own a Gigabyte motherboard, not sure of the model atm. I am not insisting on using two...if 1 will work much better than my old couple then it is ok by all means.

I want to prepare my PC for Crysis. My monitor's resolution is 1600 x 1280. No freaking idea about my power supply unit. I might change that just in case so tell me what should I buy if you can :)

Enlighten *** noob plx. How come a single card can work better than a couple?

Two 8800GTX's are faster than a single 8800GTX, but that wasen't what I was saying. If you get 150fps outdoors with a single 8800GTX with Oblivion, 1920x1080, 8X AA, 16X AF, HDR- then 300fps with SLI is just a waste of money. You're just spending money for the sake of it, rather than needing the power of two.

Isn't Crysalis 1 year away?

As for PSU, looking at 700W + for GTX SLI?

Crysis is meant to be out Q2 of 2007, but i highly doubt it will be!

Also a lot of games are not Sli optimized, so actually a single Gtx might be just a quick as 2 in some games.

An 8800GTX, heck an 8800GTS will run anything you throw at it without any problems.

Perhaps tell us the rest of your system specs, as there is also no point buying an 8800GTX (let alone 2) if you dont have a good CPU to push it.
It may be better to optimize the whole system.

an 8800 GTX is probably geting on for being as fast as most other NO G80 SLI setups, heck even a single 8800 GTS is total overkill for todays games, and probably for tomorrow's and the day after that's games too!
