Yes I am actually posting on a computer forum whose populaton is predominantly young men, a section of society famed for their laundry skills asking for advice on the matter:rolleyes:

I have just collected my only suit from my girlfiends brother after lending it to him for some reason which I have now forgotten.

I want to wear it on Wed morning for a funeral but there are some marks on it. Not sure if I have time to get it dry cleaned...will it be reasonably ok if I just bung it in the washing machine?

I REALLY need to buy a new suit but I can't be bothered/afford to do that any time between now and Wed either

You can but I wouldn't do it with any of mine.

Just go to Asda/Tesco and pick up a cheapie. You can get them for under £20 now.

Not unless you want to ruin it. I've hand washed a suit - had to otherwise dry cleaning bills would become very expensive (wearing a suit everyday even in boiling hot summers)

It may discolour, lose its shape, crinkle ... the list is endless and none of it is good. Buy a cheap one or get it done in a day. Most dry cleaners can accomodate this.

You can try, but don't be surprised if it damages it. If you do it on a cool, gentle wash it should be ok. 30 degree wool cycle, that kind of thing.

I wouldn't recommend it with any suit you were at all attached to, but it sounds like you're not too fussed, so it's probably not too big a risk. If it all goes wrong, you can always pick up a cheap one at Tesco, as suggested.

You can buy pretty nice washable suits at M+S btw, to avoid having to dry clean a suit in the future.

I have 3 suits that all go in the washing machine, never been dry cleaned once, mainly because no where round here does it.

I always wash on the lowest setting and make sure spin dry is turned off. Works a treat for me.

Johnsons do a next day cleaning service, take it in now and should be ready for mid-day tomorrow.

From their website 'The vast majority of items are dry cleaned at the branch and can often be available for collection in 4 hours.'

A dark shirt and pants are suitable attire for a funeral aren't they?

I wear a white shirt.

A couple of weeks ago I didn't have chance to get my decent dark suit sorted so I attended in black trousers, white shirt, black tie and black overcoat. Has much the same effect.

no where around you does it??

morrisions? asda? most supermarkets...

Ok my current wash of some towels and socks and stuff has just finished. I AM going to put it in the washing machine on the lowest setting.

I am now more interested in what will happen to it than whether I can wear it again. :)
