I had reason yesterday to fit a couple of mains plugs and it got me thinking that it's something that people simply don't have to do these days. Everything comes with a moulded plug now and so there's just not the need to cut off [for example] European plugs and fit a standard 13 amp plug instead.

It used to be taught in school - I remember the science lesson where we were shown how to fit them and then everyone had a go but that's just not done any more. My kids don't know and that's something I shall teach them.

Incidentally, the method I taught myself (pre the school lesson I mentioned) was by remembering Brown starts with BR which stands for Brown Right and Blue starts with BL which stands for Blue Left. I still thought that to myself today when I put those two plugs on.

So, be honest. Can you put on a mains plug?

(can this be a poll please - Two options, 'yes' and 'no)

We got taught in school, I laughed because it seemed such a simple thing to do and Id done it a fair few times before from tinkering around with computers and technology etc but a lot of people couldnt do it/be bothered to learn.

Jokes on them when they have to call an electrician to change a plug.

We got taught at school 8 or so years ago but can't remember how to do it now. Never had a need to either.

My dad made it to 48 without ever having learnt to do this. The only time I remember him actually trying, it fell off!

Edit: My mum loves to tell the story of how I made changing plugs my 'hobby', aged 6. I would swap plugs on everything in the house I could lay my hands on, for 'safety'. I was such a nerd even then :o.

In a forum full of computer/electronic fans I'd be shocked if the number were low!

With the right tools I can wire a plug in under a minute :D

BR which stands for Brown Right and Blue starts with BL which stands for Blue Left.

lol that is how I still do it, and if I forget whats L and N I just open up a plug! :p

Old house wiring (black and red iirc) can be a pain to marry up. some of the wiring in my house is all red, L and N.

****s.

I just used the acronym NEL going from left to right [neutral, earth, live]. I never had a problem remembering which colour was which.

Ive had to replace wires and sockets and stuff when I worked for a sound and lighting company....surprised I was allowed to do it since I'm not trained.

When I was at school in 6th form me and my mate did all the sound and lights for the stage shows, we rewired so many plugs and sockets, looking back it was probably quite agains health and safety but its a good job we did because the elderly care taker had made loads of extension leads and had wired the sockets the wrong way round like you would if you were wiring a plug.

That was a boring day redoing all of those.

as everyone else, learnt at school in science :)

didn't really have any way of remembering, i just know that Earth is in the middle and live has the fuse connected to it

For real man points;

Who here can hang a door (size it from a blank, rebate the hinges, fit the lock etc.)?

I did one over the weekend, took a couple of goes to get the hinges but the rest was a breeze.
