Can you recommend me an air cooler for E6600?

There's a lot of coolers out there that can do the job but i'd really like to know what people recommend as the best to go for.

So heres my limits:

  • Has to be an air cooler.
  • I'd really like the lowest noise cooler. That's the top priority but only just.
  • Second priority is performance I'm not going to be pushing boundaries with overclocking but i want my cpu life to be nice and long!
  • Third priority is price, if something is worth it i'd go up to £50 but i don't expect to hit that.
  • Lastly, although fairly important, it needs to fit in a coolermaster wave master case and a "standard" ATX mobo. So if it is smaller but not noisier then i'd probably prefer it!

I have looked around a bit, but from personal experiences what would you recommend I go for.

Cheers, Dan.

get the Tuniq Tower 120 CPU Cooler. This seems to be recommended cooler of choice on the boards.

I was going to get the Zalman CNPS9700-NT nVidia Tritium Super Aero Flower Cooler.

I think they offer a similar performance so I have decided on the Tuniq

if you have the p5n-e sli, its very hard to fir a lot of coolers because of the FAT northbridge. my fan on my artic cooling 7 isnt actually attached to the heatsink 100%. the heatsink sits fine though.

i was going to go for the Asus P5B (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard. Will i have any problems fitting heatsink/fan to that one?

just hooked up a rig with a tuniq 120 with a p5b-e plus and it fits fine. big heatsink, bigger than i thought to be fair.

I have no idea of the new thermaltake heatsink is out soon, but saw a pic at some comp show a while ago with a big typhoon style heatsink except it extends to twice the width, 2x 120mm fans flat but it just extends(with heatpipes transfering heat) to a wider sink which extends out over the memory, so the 2nd fan will cool sink and memory aswell which should be useful. again, not a clue when its out though :(

I must say I've been very surprised by the quality of the E6600 stock cooler. I built a system last week but had a problem after a few days with the Arctic Cooler Freezer Pro 7 (fan started to cut out). I switched over to the stock HSF and have noticed minimal difference in cooling or noise. The stock cooler has a copper insert and a very quiet fan that does not go past 2500rpm.
I'm mildly overclocked (3.0ghz @ stock 1.325 volts) and get idle 30C, load 58C. Both coolers use the PWM fan control of my motherboard. These chips ruin so cool that unless you are going for a large overclock (+high voltage) then most coolers can be set to run at low rpm silently.

I think you're talking about the Coolermaster Geminii. It's due out in March and will be £35-£40 from what i've heard! Massive sink!

hmm, taking a gander on the coolermaster site that is probably what i've seen a pic of. but i'm 98% sure i saw a little roundup of some comp trade show on anand maybe, or somewhere and i'm 90% sure it was in a thermaltake roundup.

either way, it looks meaty, but will have to see how it performs. the typhoon now will keep memory/pwm stuff cooler than if you use a tuniq, but a tuniq, set up with fan pushing air straight to rear exhaust means you tend to get rid of the hottest air asap, with the typhoon style air recirculates and increases case temps. basically have to see reviews from, hopefully anandtech as they've tested all the best sinks at the moment in same way so hopefully accurate(ish) results.
